Location Method: AMIS Site Visit

Access Description: The site is accessible by driving south along the Caithness Road from Hearst and then westward toward Oba. The pits and shafts are located near Shenango Lake, east of the railway tracks.



Exploration History

1935-36: Shenango Gold Mines Limited - small scale, open cut mining; 50 tpd mill installed. 1935: Hollinger Gold Mines Ltd.- trenching, sampling 1937: Shenango Gold Mines Ltd. - 90 ft adit driven from bottom of open pit, 40 ft X-cutting; 52 ft vertical shaft sunk to the east; 2500 ft diamond drilling. 1938: Shenango Gold Mines Ltd. - trenching, 5 ddh (1400 ft). 1939: Shenango Gold Mines Ltd. - new shaft sunk to 125 ft, 20 ft drfting; surface trenching. 1979-80: Sulpetro Minerals/St. Joseph Explorations Ltd. - ground geophysics, mapping, sampling, soil sampling, IP survey. 1984-86: Falconbridge Ltd. - soil survey, sampling, 44 ddh, stripping, trenching. 1999-2007: D. McKinnon - 3 ddh (431 m), ground geophysics, trenching. 2013: Canadian Orebodies Inc. - geochemical sampling.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The sericite schists have a locally gneissic texture and are intruded by aplite, feldspar porphyry, amphibolite and pegmatite. The mafic metavolcanics have been metamorphosed to amphibolite and have few primary volcanic textures preserved.
