Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (B Nelson) - Carter (1982) shows the area as being underlain by mafic, intermediate and felsic metavolcanic rocks. Mafic intrusive rocks are also identified in the area. Massive, banded pyrite and pyrrhotite in basalt can be located in a creek bed on the eastern side of the Kimberly-Clark road halfway between Mile 8 and Mile 9 at Sand Lake. The sulphide mineralization is accompanied by chert which shows microfolding. The deposit is 1.52 m wide, striking E47 degrees S with a vetical dip. The exposed strike length was 1 m. The occurrence of banding in both the chert and the sulphides, the presence of the microfolded chert, and the absence of pervasive alteration suggest that the deposit is a chemical sediment.
