Access Description: The occurrences are located approximately midway between the Ursa Major Prospect and the Empress Gold Mine, in Syine Township, about 12 km northeast of Terrace Bay (claim map G-634, Syine Township). Easiest access to the area is by air. The Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 17) passes 2.6 km to the south. The exact location of the occurrences where the samples were collected is not known, precluding accurate access information.

Exploration History

1900: Stripping, trenching and sampling; J. McQuaig and J. Davidson. Post-1900: Exploration and development activity took place in the area, although it is not known if these actual occurrences were worked on further. 1981-1985: Unspecified surface work including sampling; Micham Explorations Inc.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The occurrences are described by Bow (1901, pp.86-87): On May 20, I walked over locations R. 692 and 693 and HP 476, owned by John McQuaig of Jackfish and John Davidson of Port Arthur. The former acted as guide in my examination. The three locations adjoin and are on the road to the Ursa Major Mine, between three and four miles (4.8 to 6.4 km) from the steamboat landing on Jackfish Lake. The formation of all three is greenstone. R. 693 contains 270 acres. There is a vein which is exposed for 40 or 50 feet (12 or 15 m), and is traceable by outcroppings at intervals for a much greater distance. It is about 8 feet (2.4 m) with 3? feet (1 m) of solid quartz, the rest being a mixture of quartz and greenstone. The quartz is said to assay $5.80 per ton. HP. 467 contains 187 acres. On it there is a quartz vein 6 or 7 feet (1.8 or 2 m) wide, with rather indefinite walls. A test pit has been sunk 4 feet (1.2 m) in it, and is being continued. The assays are said to be $3.75 in gold and $2.50 in silver. There is another vein on the same location one to two feet (30 cm to 60 cm) wide, on which an open cut has been made 10 or 12 feet (3 or 3.6 m) into the hillside. On R.692 a shaft has been sunk 24 feet (7.3 m) but it was more than half full of water at the time of inspection. There is about 4 feet (1.2 m) of quartz, and the vein is about 6 feet (1.8 m) wide between walls. Much of it is decomposed schistose matter. It is said to average $3.50 all across.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Work by Micham Explorations Inc. in the area west of the McQuaig-Davidson occurrence confirmed gold values at the North Siville occurrence (up to 0.353 ounce per ton Au) and interesting mineralization 1000 feet southwest of Little Davidson Lake (Dadson 1983). Grab samples collected from the occurrences in 1901 by OBM geologist J.A. Bow (1901, p.86-86) returned the following assay results: Claim R.693: 0.339 opt Au Claim HP.467: 0.220 opt Au and 4.03 opt Ag Claim R.692: 0.20 opt Au.

May 30, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - Bow (1901) described the showing as “a vein which is exposed for 40 or 50 feet (12 or 15 m), and is traceable by outcroppings at intervals for a much greater distance. It is about 8 feet (2.4 m) with 3.5 feet (1 m) of solid quartz, the rest being a mixture of quartz and greenstone. The quartz is said to assay $5.80 per ton (0.339 opt Au). HP 457 contains 187 acres. On it there is a quartz vein 6 or 7 feet (1.8 or 2 m) wide, with rather indefinite walls. A test pit has been sunk 4 feet (1.2 m) in it. The assays are said to be $3.75 (0.22 opt) in gold and $2.50 (4.03 opt) in silver. There is another vein on the same location one to two feet (30 cm to 60 cm) wide, on which an open cut has been made 10 or 12 feet (3 or 3.6 m) into the hillside. On R 692, a shaft has been sunk 24 feet (7.3 m) but it was more than half full of water at the time of inspection. There is about 4 feet (1.2 m of quartz, and the vein is about 6 feet (1.8 m) wide between walls. Much of it is decomposed schistose matter. It is said to average $3.50 (0.2 opt Au) all across.”
