Access Description: The occurrences are located in Syine Township approximately 3.6 km north of Highway 17 at a point about 15.5 km east of Terrace Bay. They are found on the eastern and western shores of a small, unnamed lake approximately 0.8 km south of the Ursa Major Prospect (TB 66069, claim map G-634, Syine Township). Access may be gained by aircraft to the lake immediately north of the occurrences. This small unnamed lake is also the lake east of the Ursa Major shafts. The small lake with the showings may be reached along a ravine that connects the two lakes. Trenches on the east and west side of the lake are present.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The original showings were in four quartz veins. The main vein is 0.46 m to 1.83 m in width and has been traced for a length of 121.9 m (Resident Geologist's Files, Schreiber-Hemlo District, Thunder Bay). The showings discovered in 1983 are described by Hinz (1984, assessment files): Trenching was conducted across a mafic volcanic hosted quartz vein which yielded favourable assay results (4963 ppb Au and 2886 ppb Au) during the 1983 field season. Prospecting conducted in the surrounding area extended the quartz vein structure 400 feet (121.9 m) west to the opposite side of a small lake. Here several narrow, discontinuous quartz veins were found. The quartz vein(s) was trenched at three locations; above the cliff exposure on the east side of the lake on the cliff exposure and on the western shore of the lake opposite the cliff. The flows marginal to the quartz vein are sheared, silicified and carbonatized, with the sheared section being friable and deeply weathered. Further a moderate potassium enrichment was noted and characterized by a pinkish fresh surface. After trenching, the quartz vein which ranged in thickness from 6 inches to 6 feet (0.15 to 1.83 m) was found to be bull white, fractured and strongly mineralized in some sections. It has a 120 degree strike and was folded over to form a 'saddle' shape with a fold axis trending 114 degrees and plunging 22 degrees to the east.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The original discovery (1934) vein showed what was termed 'heavy' mineralization of chalcopyrite and iron sulphide, together with tellurides (Resident Geologist's Files, Schreiber-Hemlo District, Thunder Bay). Mineralization was noted in both the host rocks and in the quartz veins of the recently developed showings. Hinz (1984, assessment files) notes: Mineralization observed in the flow includes disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite which upon assay returned 85 ppb gold and 0.4 ppm silver. In the quartz vein, mineralization included pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite, molybdenite and possibly ferri-molybdenite. All were seen as fine disseminations, then veinlets and/or small massive patches. One grab sample taken by W. Siville from the original discovery vein assayed $131.95 (3.77 ounces per ton Au @ 35.00 per ounces Au) to the ton (Resident Geologist's Files, Schreiber-Hemlo District, Thunder Bay). Dadson (1983, assessment files) described a shear structure 2000 feet southeast of the Ursa Major Mine, that returned assays of 4963 ppb Au and 2886 ppb Au (approximately 0.17 ounce per ton Au and 0.10 ounce per ton Au respectively). Hinz (1984, assessment files) reports that: Chip and grab samples taken across the quartz vein yielded assays from 315 ppb Au to 0.353 oz. gold; 0.2 to 3.6 ppm silver; and 6 to 122 ppm molybdenum. The highest gold assay was taken from the quartz vein at the fold axis. Samples were taken from the cliff exposure but assay results have not yet been returned. Samples taken from the western trench assayed 29 ppb Au to 0.105 oz. gold; 0.6 to 4.6 ppm silver; and 4 to 29 ppm molybdenum.

Alteration Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The flows marginal to the quartz vein are sheared, silicified and carbonatized, with the sheared section being friable and deeply weathered. Further a moderate potassium enrichment was noted and characterized by a pinkish fresh surface.
