Access Description: The prospect is located in Walsh Township. The main showing is situated on both the east and west sides of Dead Horse Creek, about 400 m north of the CPR main line and 1.2 km south of Highway 17 (claim map G-636, Walsh Township). Access may be gained using a winter (drill) road which extends from Highway 17, approximately 122 m east of the Great West Timber Company Road (Dead Horse Creek Road), to the prospect site, a distance of 1390 m.

Exploration History

1921: Prospecting; Mr. Darling. Mineralized vein located at this time. 1948-1950: Occurrence was staked by Seaboard Oil and Mines Limited and subsequently optioned to Brae Brest Gold Mines Ltd. who planned to conduct surface exploration and diamond drilling. It is not known if this work was performed. 1952: Building construction, shaft sinking (2 compartment shaft 15.5 m deep), drifting commenced at 14.3 m and was continued in a westerly direction for 77.4m, diamond drilling (14 holes totalling 1681 m); Saratoga Explorations Limited. The drifting failed to intersect the downward extension of the No.1 vein, all but 2 of the surface drill holes did, however intersect the vein. 1953-1967: The occurrence was staked several times by various parties but no work was recorded. 1968: Unspecified manual and mechanical work, geochemical and geophysical (EM) surveys and diamond drilling (1 hole 85 m in length); L. Hannon. 1970: Trenching and diamond drilling (2 holes totalling 62.8 m); L. Robinson. 1973-1974: Power stripping (bulldozer); R. McCabe. 1975: Power stripping; R. McCabe 1978: Power stripping; R. McCabe. 1980: Unspecified surface work; R. McCabe. 1983: Unspecified amount of diamond drilling; R. McCabe. Property examination and lithogeochemical sampling; SH Resident Geologist staff (OGS). 1986-1987: Diamond drilling, sampling and dewatering of the shaft; R. McCabe. Property examination, lithogeochemical sampling; SH Resident Geologist staff (OGS). 2014: Claim staked by M.J. Gaudreau and transferred to T.P.H. Martel.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Walker (1967, p.35) described the prospect's geology: A narrow zone of galena-sphalerite mineralization crosses greywacke and a north-striking diabase dike. Red syenite dikes cut the greywacke nearby. Sulphides are found with calcite and minor amounts of quartz mostly in a 1-inch fracture that strikes N30 W and dips steeply to the north. A zone of shearing, carbonatization, and scattered sulphides adjacent to the fracture is up to 2 feet(0.6 m) or more in width and seems to be richest where it crosses the diabase. Shklanka (1969, pp.303-304) noted: ...two fracture zones in chloritized trachytic volcanics...enclosing a quartz vein striking N80 W for 400 feet (122 m) and reportedly up to 1.5 feet (0.5 m) wide and carrying galena and sphalerite mostly as a 2 inch seam on the south wall of the vein. This is known as No. 1 zone. No. 2 zone is 150 feet (45 m) long and is located 150 feet north (45 m) of the shaft which is on No. 1 zone. The combined length is 1300 feet (396 m).

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The ore minerals consist of erratically distributed galena, sphalerite and pyrite in a gangue of quartz (Shklanka 1969, pp.303-304). A grab sample taken by Walker (1956, p.5) from the main showing of Dead Horse Creek South assayed 25.20% lead, 28.81% zinc and 55.86 ounces per ton Ag. Sampling of the shaft collar on claim TB 41871 returned 21.80 ounces per ton Ag, lead 7.14%, zinc 13% across 1.37 m. Grab samples collected from the occurrence in 1983 and 1986 by OGS Resident Geologist staff returned assay results which varied up to 0.02 opt Au, 30.14 opt Ag, 13.9% Pb, 31.2% Zn and 3 ppm Mo. About 68 tonnes (75 tons) of cobbed ore were taken from a pocket at the shaft, averaging 60.49 ounces per ton Ag, 52.94% lead and 15.60% zinc. It is not known if these metals were extracted from this ore.
