Primary Commodities: Gold

Secondary Commodities: Copper, Lead

Location

Township or Area: Syine

Latitude: 48° 50' 9.83"    Longitude: -86° 55' 24.29"

UTM Zone: 16    Easting: 505620   Northing: 5409235    UTM Datum: NAD83

Resident Geologist District: Thunder Bay South

NTS Grid: 42D15SW

Point Location Description: General location from discussion with prospector R. Wahl

Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: Bow (1897) gives a general location of 4 km northwest of Jackfish Station on Jackfish Bay and 2.8 km from the water. If the direction from Jackfish Station is northeast not northwest the location is locally known as Winch Lake. The showing is reported to be in a diverted creek bed. The location lies within Syine Township (claim map G-634). If the location is coincident with the Winch Lake occurrence access is from Highway 17, 1.2 km north of Sawmill Creek. At this point travel by foot east for 1.6 km to the south end of a small lake. Old equipment and a water filled shaft are found at the occurrence.

Exploration History

1897: Shaft (9 m deep) sunk; Jackfish Mining Syndicate. Because the exact location of the occurrence is not known, the extent to which the following work history is directly applicable to it is unknown. 1980: Manual surface work; A. Ferguson. 1983: Airborne geophysical survey (EM, VLF, MAG); R.A. Schiralli. 1985: Ground geophysical (EM, MAG), geochemical and geological surveys; R.A. Schiralli (?). 1985-1989: The occurrence was staked several times by various parties but no work was recorded. 2011-12: R. Renner, W. Richards and J. Hamel conducted prospecting and attempted without luck to locate the historic showing.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Coleman (1898) states: On the east side of Jackfish Bay is the Megatherium mine, owned by the same company as the Mogotherium. As it was not working, and I was told there was nothing to be seen but a shaft full of water, I did not think it worth while to lose a day by stopping to examine it. A saw mill has been erected on the property to provide lumber for a stamp mill, which apparently will not be required for some time. Bow (1898) referred to the occurrence as: ...There is a large exposure of quartz 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.7 m) wide, but which I am told is traceable only a short distance. It is in the bed of a small creek, and the water had to be dammed and turned...A shaft had been sunk to a depth of 30 feet (9 m), but was full of water at the time of my visit.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Hopkins (1922 p.18) describes the mineralogy: Further south in the granite is the Megatherium property which has a small white quartz vein carrying a little pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena which show the presence of gold on assay. Grab samples collected from the occurrence in 1984 by OGS Resident geologist staff returned assay values which varied from <0.01 to 0.004 opt Au and nil to <0.01 opt Ag.

May 04, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - Bow (1898) described the Megatherium showing as being a large exposure of quartz 3-3.6 m wide but only traceable a short distance. It was in the bed of a small creek, and the water had to be dammed and turned off into an artificial ditch which rejoined the creek farther down.
