Access Description: The occurrence is located in Syine Township just north of Highway 17, approximately 14.5 km east of Terrace Bay and 0.8 km north of Jackfish Lake (claim map G-634, Syine Township). Access may be gained via the Trans-Canada Highway 17 to a point approximately 400 m west of Fishnet Creek.
1897: Unspecified development work including the sinking of a number of pits and a shaft; Jackfish Mining Syndicate. A quartz vein carrying galena and pyrite was reportedly traced along strike for approximately 0.8 km. Property examination; ODM geologist A.P. Coleman. 1900s: The property was abandoned and subsequently restaked intermittently by several parties but no work was recorded. 1983: Trenching and sampling; A. Ferguson. 1984, 1986, 1987: Property examination and lithogeochemical sampling; OGS Resident Geologist staff.

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The occurrence is first described by Coleman (1898, pp.135-136): On the road from the Empress to Jackfish I passed the Mogotherium mine, owned by the Jackfish Mining Syndicate. Mr. J.T. Horne of Fort William is the manager, but no work was going on at the time. Some of the workmen still camped on the property told me that the vein had been traced for half a mile and pits were sunk at intervals. I visited the deepest of these pits. At one there is a vein of white quartz in granite and carrying pyrite and galena. The vein is somewhat irregular, the quartz and granite being mixed. No free gold is visible, but some is found by assaying. At another pit the walls are of schist and the quartz occurs in stringers through it. A little free gold has been found here. The quartz is very white, but carries pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena in small quantities. On August 17, 1984, Resident Geologist personnel visited the old Mogotherium property near Jackfish, accompanied by J. Ferguson who has staked the property. A shaft on the west side of Highway 17 and full of water, measures about 3.5 m (12 feet) by 4.5 m (15 feet) has been poled (measured) by Mr. Ferguson to a depth of about 5.1 m (17 feet). In an old report the shaft was said to be 9.1 m (30 feet) deep so that the excavation may possible be partially filled in with debris. The shaft, on the west, and two pits on the east side of Highway 17, are located on claim 675104 in Syine Township about 0.8 km (0.5 miles) north of Jackfish Lake. Mafic schist or gneiss which are partially amphibolite possibly derived from mafic metavolcanic rocks, containing sulphide mineralization, outcrop on both sides of Highway 17. These rocks are surrounded by white to pink granite, quartz diorite and granite gneiss of the Terrace Bay Batholith.

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Coleman (1898) described the mineralization as follows: Some of the workmen still camped on the property told me that the vein had been traced for half a mile and pits were sunk at intervals. Schnieders et al (1996) provide the following comments: On the north and south sides of the shaft a vein is exposed, the north part of the vein being massive white bull quartz showing no mineralization. The southerly exposure of the vein shows pyrite mineralization. On the east side of the present highway two old trenches, the most westerly one about 61 m (200 feet) from the road is about 1.75 m (5 feet) deep and full of rock and debris. Here the vein is quite narrow, 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) wide strikes about east- west and dips steeply to the north. Grab samples collected from the occurrence in 1984 by OGS Resident Geologist staff returned assay values which varied from <0.01 to 0.02 opt Au and <0.10 to 19.27 opt Ag.
