Exploration History

Pre-1882: Mineralization discovered in area. High gold and silver values reported. 1882: Bulk sampling and assaying; Elgin Silver Mining Co. 1884-1885: Unspecified development work, a tunnel or adit 45.74 m long was driven in the area sometime prior to 1890; Elgin Silver Mining Co. c.1928: Surface work and road construction; W. Longworth. 1929 (?): Unspecified surface work; Northern Light Gold Mines. 1933-1936: Trenching, stripping and pitting; Siville-Ferrier Syndicate. 1956-1980: The occurrence was restaked several times by various parties but no work was recorded. 1981-1983: Stripping and surface work; J.R. Hamel. 1984: Geophysical (EM, MAG) and geological surveys; Goldhurst Resources Inc. 1985: Property examination and lithogeochemical sampling; OGS Resident Geologist staff. 1987: The property was optioned as part of a larger block which also hosted the Beaver Creek, Blood, Elgin North, and the Siville showings by Forerunner Resources. Stripping, trenching, soil and lithogeochemical sampling and geological mapping; Forerunner Resources (which later became Beardmore resources Ltd.). Property examination and lithogeochemical sampling; OGS Resident Geologist staff. 1991: Prospecting, sampling and trenching (on the Beaver Creek showing); J.R. Hamel. 1992-1994: J.R. Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Wawa

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Geological Age: Archean

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - According to Map No. 2107 (Walker 1967) the area is underlain by granite to quartz diorite rocks which have intruded massive to pillowed to amphibolitic mafic volcanic rocks. The schistosity trends N70 degrees E and dips an average 85 degrees to the south. The occurrence consists of a sulphide-mineralized quartz-carbonate vein hosted within biotite-chlorite-amphibole schist.

Lithology

Vein 1 Quartz-Carbonate Crack-Seal Host
Granite 2 Near

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The quartz +/- carbonate vein is up to 3 m in width strikes 30 degrees and dips 25 degrees NW. The vein displays a crack-seal texture and has seams of amphibolite within the vein. The vein is hosted by a biotite-chlorite-amphibolite schist and the quartz has a strained or bluish appearance near the contacts. Granitic intrusive rocks are also present in the area, and the contact with the Terrace Bay Batholith is nearby.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - De Quadros (1988) described the Elgin showing as consisting of two adits each about 65 to 70 feet long. Galena was observed in vein samples and lead shows a strong correlation with silver. Coarse euhedral pyrite up to 2 cm in size was observed. Grab samples collected from the occurrence by Noranda Mines Limited personnel during a property visit returned assay values of up to 1.09% Cu, 1.24% Zn, 2.42% Pb, 1.11 opt Ag and 0.68 opt Au (Schnieders et al. 1996). Grab samples collected from the occurrence by Forerunner Resources in 1987 returned assay values of up to 70 ppb Au and 160 ppm Ag. Grab samples collected from the occurrence in 1987 by OGS Resident Geologist staff returned assay values of up to 0.02 opt Au and 6.54 opt Ag.
