Geology Comments

Jan 09, 2015 (Therese Pettigrew) - The Geordie Lake property is underlain by syenitic and gabbroic rocks of Centre I of the late-Proterozoic-age Coldwell Alkaline Complex which intrudes and bisects the Neoarchean Schreiber-Hemlo greenstone belt and the southern margins of the Black-Pic Batholith of the Wawa Subprovince of the Superior Structural Province. The 25 km in diameter (580 square km), sub-circular, composite body is the largest alkaline intrusive complex in North America and is the southernmost member of a N-S trending belt of alkaline intrusions. The Coldwell Complex was emplaced during the early stages of the Middle Proterozoic mid-continent rifting event. The complex formed as the result of alkaline magmatism associated with 3 nested intrusive centres (Centres I through III) active during cauldron subsidence along major faults. The silica-saturated Centre I intrusions consist of the eastern and western border-group gabbros (the oldest units within the complex) and subsequent intrusions of ferroaugite syenite and syenite-syenodiorite. The Geordie Lake Intrusion, an elongated, 3000 m long, gabbroic and troctolitic body intrudes the Centre I syenites and hosts multiple, roughly N-S striking, texturally and compositionally heterogeneous zones of Cu-Pd-Ag-rich disseminated sulphides (AFRI 42D16SW2003). The eastern contact of the Geordie Lake intrusion is exposed on surface and dips 30-60 degrees towards the west (AFRI 42D16SW2012).

Mineralization Comments

Apr 13, 2016 (Therese Pettigrew) - Drennan and Fell (2010) describe the Geordie Lake deposit as a poly-metallic, troctolite/ophitic gabbro intrusion with disseminations, blebs and veins of sulphide mineralization. The sulphides are enriched in Cu, Ni, Co, Pd, Pt, Au, Ag, Ti, Te and consist primarily of chalcopyrite with minor bornite, pyrite, millerite, cobaltite, siegentite, sphalerite, and galena. The most significant mineralization observed on the property includes the Mathias and MacRae showings and occurs along the Lower Contact Zone (formerly called the Eastern Contact Zone) within a gabbro body in a zone composed of 1-8% chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, bornite, covellite and chalcocite. Eight to ten percent coarsely disseminated ilmenite and titaniferous magnetite also occurs within this zone. This Cu-Pd-Pt-Ag-Ti-rich sulphide zone has been mapped over 1500 m length and averages approximately 15 m in width. The mineralized zone occurs within a potassic-altered alkaline gabbro directly adjacent to a gabbro/quartz syenite contact, within the Coldwell Alkaline Complex. Analytical results received by St. Joe Gold in 1986 from 300 grab and channel samples show that Cu, Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, Fe and Ti all increase very dramatically near the eastern gabbro/syenite contact. OGS analyses of selected grab samples from the gabbroic rock with disseminated sulphides indicate values of up to 1.73% Cu, 394 ppm Ni, 110 ppb Pt, 2130 ppb Pd, 220 ppb Au and 7 ppm Ag. In the chalcopyrite-bornite-magnetite-rich stringers, values run as high as 32.3% Cu, 1050 ppm Ni, 4250 ppb Pt, 2775 ppb Pd, 1080 ppb Au and 112 ppm Ag. Drilling by the company in 1887 delineated a zone between 3 and 35 m wide. DDH7 intersected mineralization 12 m into the syenite, with the last 3 m running 0.63% Cu, 297 ppb Pd and 0.8 ppm Ag. Airborne magnetic surveys have traced the extent of the mineralized zone over a strike length of 2500 m (Patrie, 1997, AFRI 42D16SW0045). The best mineralization discovered to date occurs within the Eastern Contact Zone and includes the MacRae (Ameranium), Mathias, and Joa occurrences. This zone is between 5 and 40 m in thickness, has been traced on surface for apprx 2000 m, and is composed of 1-30$ coarsely disseminated chalcopyrite, with lesser amounts of bornite, pyrite, magnetite and supergene chalcocite. A wide variety of platinum-group minerals, base- and precious-metal tellurides, bismuthinides and alloys are associated with the disseminated grains of chalcopyrite. The subparallel sulphide zones located to the west are generally thinner, more diffuse and less regular than the Eastern Contact Zone and often contain fewer percentages of finer-grained sulphides. Most of the mineralization observed within the intrusion is primary magmatic in origin; however, structurally remobilized stringers and elongated pods of chalcopyrite-magnetite occur locally (AFRI 42D16SW2003).

Alteration Comments

Jan 09, 2015 (Therese Pettigrew) - The Geordie Lake Intrusion is generally unaltered to weakly altered with localized zones of strong to intense alteration. There is no apparent pattern to the alteration and the most intense alteration is not associated with the gabbro/syenite contact or the known mineralized zones. The alteration observed is possibly due to volatile-rich, late stage magmatic, deuteric fluids and not exotic hydrothermal fluids (AFRI 42D16SW2003).
