Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Archean

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Carter (1975) described the occurrence as follows: The pyrite deposit is in the bluff on the western shore of Dinkin lake. The pyrite is in a fine grained brecciated diabase that was intruded into the Croon Lake-Dinkin Lake Fault. The diabase contains about 4 percent pyrite across a width of 3 feet and along a strike-length of 3/4 mile. Pyrite occurs as disseminated grains in the diabase and in the quartz that cements the diabase fragments. Schnieders et al. (1996) provide the following comments regarding the area: N. Hibbart prospected the Dinkin Lake area during a period between 1983 and 1987. Hibbart reportedly had a camp on Dinkin Lake and prospected the Gravel River/Kamuck River Fault area and Dickison Lake area as well as the Dinkin Lake area. During this period numerous samples of quartz veins, altered granite and metasedimentary rock were collected by N. Hibbart. Notes and maps submitted with samples in 1984 by N. Hibbart indicated quartz veins over 100 feet wide.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Carter (1975) states: The pyrite is in a fine grained brecciated diabase that was intruded into the Croon Lake-Dinkin Lake Fault. The diabase contains about 4 percent pyrite across a width of 3 feet and along a strike-length of 3/4 mile. Pyrite occurs as disseminated grains in the diabase and in the quartz that cements the diabase fragments. During a period between 1983 and 1987 over 30 samples were submitted by N. Hibbart from the Gravel River - Dickison Lake area and assayed by the OGS Resident Geologist's program. Two samples submitted in 1984 (Sample 84-BNH-4 and 84-BNH-6) assayed 0.03 ounce per ton Au and 0.06 ounce per ton Au and are reported to have come from an area 650 to 850 feet south off the Gravel River along a small creek. This area is 2 to 3 km east of the Greenbush area and 1 km north of the Greenhedge Lake Fault occurrence. This gold occurrence has thus been named the Hibbart occurrence, and may correspond to the Greenbush Lake occurrence.
