Lithology Comments

Nov 30, 2015 (Therese Pettigrew) - The core logs describe the metasediments as fine dark green argillaceous sediment with horizons of up to 0.67 m of coarser quartzite. 1 cm thick bands of magnetic iron formation are scattered over the section with pyrite occurring as thin horizons and disseminated over sections of the sediments (AFRI 42E11NE0021). Banded iron formation (BIF) can be traced within the Beardmore-Geraldton Belt from at least the Klotz Lake area east of Longlac to Beardmore in the west and, by aeromagnetic expression, beneath the Nipigon Plate rocks to the west of Lake Nipigon. The BIF units tend to be less than 20 metres thick although thicknesses in excess of 60 metres are present, in areas of structural complexity; e.g. the island in Barton Bay. The BIF consists of mesobands of principally magnetite with minor hematite alternating with mesobands of either chert or siltstone (Macdonald, 1988).
