Exploration History

1922: Claims covering the area were staked by J.J. McLellan. 1933: R. McLellan staked additional claims and a total of 34 assessment days were credited to each claim for unspecified surface work. Claims were acquired by Longacre Longlac Gold Mines Limited. 1934: The claims were surveyed and surface trenching was performed. 1935: Surface trenching was performed and a number of holes were drilled by Longacre Longlac Gold Mines Ltd. (major shareholders of Portage Longlac Gold Mines Ltd). 1936: Drill program completed (29 holes totalling 1657.2 m). McLellan Longlac Gold Mines Limited was incorporated, then conducted further drilling and an EM survey. 1937: Operations suspended due to disappointing results. 1938-39: Work discontinued after 13 holes, totalling 2187.9 m were drilled by H.C. Dudley. 1941: McLellan Gold Mines Ltd. was incorporated to finance underground exploration of the main zone. Three compartment vertical shaft suck, and levels est. Buildings constructed, and surface drilling performed. 1942: Operations suspended due to discouraging results. 1953-68: Company name changed a couple of times, but no work was performed. 1980: Property was optioned to Roxmark Mines Ltd, Lynx Canada Explorations Ltd. and Canadian Reynolds Metals Co. Ltd. 1981: A grid was cut, mag and EM surveys conducted and stripping and trenching were completed. Property was mapped and a diamond-drill program was completed (7 holes totalling 2613 m). Extensive stripping was also completed. 1984: The company received an OMEP grant of $205,000 and approval for an additional $70,000. 2016: Greenstone Gold Mines carried out an IP survey.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (B Nelson) - The property is underlain predominantly by metasediments, principally greywacke and slate with some iron formation and conglomerate. Intrusive rocks exposed on the property include hornblende diorite and plagioclase diorite porphyry, both of which form narrow dykes and sill-like bodies arranged approximately parallel to the strike of the sedimentary strata. In general, the sedimentary formations strike about N75 degrees W and dip steeply south. Locally, they are tightly folded, along axes that strike slightly south of west and plunge in this direction at 40 to 50 degrees. These Z-shaped folds are incompatible with the Ellis Syncline along the south limb of which they occur, and are believed to be related to initial adjustments along the Bankfield-Tombill fault zone, which strikes N75 degrees E across the southern part of the property. The principal gold deposit consists of a shear zone about 150 feet in width in dark slaty greywacke and iron formation. Mineralization is largely pyrite with which gold values are apparently associated. This gold zone has a length of about 1,300 feet on McLellan and extends eastward into the Tombill Main Group for another 700 feet. Within this broad zone on the McLellan propertyt there are two main zones lying parallel and 60-70 feet apart. A second gold bearing zone one claim to the west consists of narrow quartz veins in greywacke or in narrow highly sheared diorite dykes or sills. The veins are mineralized with a little py and asp. The shear zone or first gold zone described may be a portion of the Bankfield-Tombill Fault.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (B Nelson) - The best assay value in the south zone was 0.21 oz/ton Au over 0.8 m. Drilling of the second zone to the west yielded values including the following: HOLE 111: 0.39 oz/ton Au over 0.3 m. HOLE 113: 0.40 oz/ton Au over 0.18 m. HOLE 114: 0.10 oz/ton Au over 0.24 and 0.12 m. Roxmark Mines-Lynx Canada Explorations-Canadian Reynolds Joint Venture yielded results of 0.06 oz/ton Au over 19.81 m, 0.11 oz/ton Au over 7.32 m and 0.11 oz/ton Au over 7.62 m. One 10.7 m section of 0.1 oz/ton Au reportedly contained a 15.2 cm interval of 'spectacular visible gold' in fine sedimentary rock.
