Exploration History

1934: claims were staked by Agauara Exploration Ltd. Early 1960s: When highway 801 was constructed, some of the road cuts in the SE corner of Elmhirst Township showed mineralization. Following this disclosure, Sturgeon River Gold Mines Ltd. carried out reconnaissance geological mapping of the area. 1971-72: Coniagas Mines Ltd. carried out magnetometer and EM surveys, and prospecting during which a number of Cu/Zn showings were discovered, and which were trenched and sampled. 1973: Jupiter Minerals Inc. was formed. 1986: Phoenix Gold Mines Ltd. drilled 5 DDH totalling 548.64 m. 2007: Laurion Mineral Exploration Inc. acquired the property. 2008: Laurion conducted sampling. 2010: Laurion conducted stripping, mapping, sampling, and drilled 2 DDH totalling 144.55 m. 2011: Laurion drilled 2 DDH totalling 280 m. 2012: Laurion conducted a prospecting and sampling program.

Lithology Comments

Oct 30, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - The northwestern and southeastern parts of the property are underlain by intermediate intrusive rocks, but the main feature of the property is a band of NE-trending felsic to intermediate metavolcanics that occurs between the granodioritic stocks. Most of the quartz vein systems are found within the metavolcanics and strike subparallel to the foliation of the metavolcanics. The metavolcanics are mostly rhyolitic to andesitic flows and associated brecciase, but coarse pyroclastic rocks occur intercalated with the flows. These rocks are affected by a zone of shearing and brecciation several hundred feet wide, parallel to and including many of the prominent quartz veins (Mackasey and Wallace, 1978).

Mineralization Comments

Oct 30, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - A large number of zinc and copper showings have been found on this property. Many of these are within old trenches and pits along the gold-bearing quartz veins. Massive sphalerite occurs in small pods and veins and surrounding sheared volcanic rocks. Pyrite, chalcopyrite, and minor galena also occur with the sphalerite. In one of the Jupiter Minerals trenches, visible sphalerite, ranging up to 25% of the sheared rock, occurred over a width of 18 m. Copper and zinc mineralization also occurs disseminated within felsic breccia. Commonly, sphalerite and chalcopyrite almost to the exclusion of one another. In another Jupiter Minerals trench, chalcopyrite averaging between 2-4% of the rhyolite breccia occurred continuously across a width of 3.6 m. A selected grab sample collected from a 6 m wide NE-trending zone of mineralized fractures about 300 m north of Walters Township on the west side of Highway 801 was analyzed and found to contain 1.68% Cu, 1.90% Zn, 0.03 opt Au and 1.01 opt Ag. A selected grab sample was also collected from a pod of sphalerite about 20 cm in diameter within the mineralized zone. This was found to contain 54.2% Zn, 0.19% Cu, 1.22% Pb, 0.25% Cd, 0.01 opt Au and 2.69 opt Ag (Mackasey and Walters, 1978). A sample collected by Laurion Minerals in 2008 returned values of 0.22 gpt Au, 9.1% Cu, 18.6% Zn, and 62.1 gpt Ag. There is a gold-bearing quartz vein located 10 m above the base metal sulphide zone. The gold-bearing zone returned values of 13.40 gpt Au with 1.0 gpt Ag, and 29.5 gpt Au with 10.4 gpt Ag (AFRI 20000013492).
