Access Description: The Herbert Township zinc-copper-silver prospect is located in Herbert Township approximately 20.5 km northeast of Manitouwadge and 2 km southeast of the south end of Banana Lake. Much of the area in the vicinity of the prospect is covered with swampy overburden. As a consequence, outcrop is scarce. Noranda Mines Limited (Geco Division) drill hole S-242 is located in the approximate centre of the mineralized zone and, for reference purposes, its location will be used when referring to the location of the prospect. The area overlying the prospect is accessible via motor vehicle followed by travel on foot. From Manitouwadge, proceed east and then northeasterly along the Camp 70 logging road for approximately 20 km to the Poppy South road. Proceed east along the Poppy South road for approximately 1.8 km to an unnamed tertiary logging road. Although the prospect does not outcrop on surface, several drill holes, which intersect the deposit at depth, are located approximately 150 m south of this unnamed road.



Exploration History

1957: Line cutting, geological mapping and ground geophysical surveys (MAG, EM); Mining Corporation of Canada Limited. 1964: Airborne geophysical survey (EM, MAG); Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Several conductive and magnetic anomalies were discovered in the vicinity of the occurrence. 1965: Diamond drilling (8 holes totalling 858 m); Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. The drilling intersected sulphide mineralization grading up to 0.36% Cu and 0.49% Ni over 5 feet. 1967: Geological maping; J. F. Giguere (ODM). 1978: Regional lake sediment and water geochemical survey; GSC-MNR. Samples collected from lakes in the vicinity of the occurrence did not contain anomalous amounts of gold nor base metals. 1981: Line cutting, ground geophysical surveys (MAG, HLEM) and geological mapping; Noranda Mines Limited (Geco Division). A string of conductors were identified in the vicinity of the occurrence. 1983: Diamond drilling (20 holes); Noranda Mines Limited (Geco Division). Subeconomic zinc-copper-silver mineralization was intersected by many of the holes. 1989: Geological mapping; H. Williams and F. Breaks (OGS). Dighem airborne geophysical survey (EM, MAG, VLF-EM); Noranda Exploration Company, Limited and Noranda Minerals Inc. (Geco Division). 1991: Reconnaissance till sampling program; I.M. Kettles (GSC).

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The prospect is located within the Wawa Subprovince and is underlain primarily by an east-northeast trending sequence of migmatitic, locally garnetiferous, moderately to locally strongly foliated metasedimentary rocks including biotite-quartz-feldspar gneiss and siliceous, sulphide-bearing iron formation (Giguere 1972; Kusins and Campbell 1982). Minor mafic metavolcanic rocks occur intercalated within the metasedimentary sequence (Kusins and Campbell 1982). These metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks are believed to represent the eastward extension of the Mine Series stratigraphy which hosts the Geco and Willroy orebodies (Kusins and Campbell 1982). Mineral assemblages suggest these rocks have experienced upper amphibolite facies-grade regional metamorphism (Williams and Breaks 1989, 1990). A regional-scale north-trending fault, termed the Ice Cream Lake fault, is located approximately 250 m east of the prospect (Giguere 1972, Map 2219; Kusins and Campbell 1982). A large (75 m wide), north-trending diabase dike is located approximately 700 m east of the deposit (Kusins and Campbell 1982). Several smaller, north- and northwest-trending diabase dikes occur in the surrounding area (Kusins and Campbell 1982). An easterly- trending, anticlinal fold axis has been interpreted to occur in the vicinity of the prospect (Kusins and Campbell 1982). The Herbert Township zinc-copper-silver prospect is hosted in hydrothermally altered and metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks interpreted to be the eastward extension of the Mine Series Stratigraphy which hosts the Geco and Willroy deposits (Kusins and Campbell 1982; Zaleski and Peterson 1993b). As a consequence, the area surrounding the occurrence is considered to have high potential to host additional VMS-type base metal deposits. In this regard, it is significant to note that similarly altered metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks have been discovered recently several kilometres to the northeast.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - Approximately 20 holes (averaging 1200 feet in length) were drilled in the vicinity of the prospect by Noranda Mines Limited (Geco Division) in 1983. Subeconomic amounts of base metal sulphides were intersected by many of the holes. The sulphides consist primarily of pyrite and pyrrhotite, with minor amounts sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena. Gahnite and molybdenite are reported to occur in trace amounts. The sulphides generally constitute less than 10% of the mineralized rock. A 6.6 foot section of mineralized, sericitic, biotite gneiss and siliceous iron formation collected at a depth of 961 feet in hole S-242 returned assay values of 0.62% Cu, 0.73% Zn and 1.83 ounces Ag per ton. A 4 foot section of altered gneiss collected at a depth of 633 feet in hole S-286 returned assay values of 0.27% Cu, 2.96% Zn 0.35 ounce per ton Ag and 1.89% Pb. Although no estimate of the overall size nor grade of the prospect is available, drill logs indicate that subeconomic amounts of base metal sulphides are relatively widespread in the area southeast of Banana Lake.
