Point Location Description: Railway cut

Location Method: Field Visit

Access Description: The Taradale graphite occurrence is located in the Upper Taradale Lake area approximately 49.5 km north-northeast of Manitouwadge and 5.45 km east-northeast of Stevens, a CNR railway stop. The occurrence is exposed in a railway cut approximately 845 m west of mileage marker 55 on the Capreol-Nakina branch of the mainline of the Canadian National Railway. The occurrence is accessible via motor vehicle followed by travel on foot. From Manitouwadge, travel west and then north along the Caramat Industrial Road for approximately 51.4 km to the intersection with the Stilwell Lake logging road. Proceed northeast along the Stilwell Lake logging road for approximately 9.5 km to the intersection with the Capreol-Nakina branch of the Canadian National Railway. Proceed northwest along the CNR mainline for approximately 2.1 km to mileage marker 55. Continue travelling northwest along the mainline for approximately 845 m to where the tracks make a sharp bend to the west. Graphite is exposed on the north side of the tracks along the face of a railway cut.

Exploration History

1954-1965: The occurrence was staked several times by various parties, but no work was recorded. 1965: Geological mapping; M.E. Coates (OGS). 1971: Lithogeochemical sampling; Norlac Explorations Limited. 1972: Line cutting and ground geophysical surveys (MAG, VLF-EM, and HLEM); Norlac Explorations Limited. Several weak conductors, attributed to shearing rather than to mineralization, were identified by these surveys. Note: To date (2000), no known work has been performed on the Taradale graphite occurrence. All past work was focussed on the vein- hosted copper-silver occurrences distrbuted along the Taradale lineament.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G White) - The occurrence is located within the Quetico Subprovince or Gneissic belt and is underlain primarily by moderately to locally strongly foliated metasedimentary migmatite and quartz monzonite (Coates 1968, Map 2141). Several parallel and cross-cutting quartz-feldspar pegmatite dikes have intruded the sedimentary migmatite in the vicinity of the occurrence. A NW-trending linear topographic feature, referred to as the Taradale lineament (Bayne 1971), is located approx. 80 m to the east of the occurrence. A diabase dike has intruded along this lineament. The rocks proximal to this lineament have been locally brecciated and sheared. Several copper-silver occurrences are spacially associated with this lineament. Field examinations (McKay 1991) indicate the occurrence consists of disseminated grains of medium to coarse-grained (up to 6mm across) flakes of graphite hosted within strongly foliated, locally sheared (078 / 80SE) metasedimentary migmatite. The graphite appears to be confined to a narrow (width varies from 0.5 to 2m), foliation-parallel shear zone within the migmatite. The graphite generally constitutes 3 to 5% of the mineralizated zone, but local concentrations of up to 20% occur. Where abundant, the graphite tends to be locallized in narrow (up to 2 cm wide), discontiuous, foliation-parallel seams within the shear zone. The graphite mineralization can be traced along surface for approx. 75 meters. Tarce amounts of pyrite were noted in the migmatite.

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The occurrence is located within the Quetico Subprovince and is underlain primarily by moderately to locally strongly foliated (078 degrees/80 degrees SE) metasedimentary migmatite and quartz monzonite (Coates 1968, Map 2141; Bayne 1971). Several foliation-parallel and foliation-cross-cutting quartz-feldspar pegmatite dikes have intruded the metasedimentary migmatite in the vicinity of the occurrence. A northwest-trending linear topographic feature, referred to as the Taradale lineament (Bayne 1971), is located approximately 80 m to the east of the occurrence. A diabase dike has intruded along this lineament. The rocks proximal to this lineament have been locally brecciated and sheared. Several copper-silver occurrences (e.g. the Taradale (South) copper-silver occurrence,(Schnieders et al. 1992) are spatially associated with this lineament.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D McKay) - The occurrence consists of disseminated grains and medium- to coarse-grained (up to 6 mm across) flakes of graphite hosted within strongly foliated, locally sheared (078 degrees/80 degrees SE) metasedimentary migmatite. The graphite appears to be confined to a narrow (width varies from 0.5 to 2 m), foliation-parallel shear zone within the migmatite. The graphite generally constitutes 3 to 5% of the mineralized zone, but local concentrations of up to 20% occur. Where abundant, the graphite tends to be locallized in narrow (up to 2 cm wide), discontinuous, foliation-parallel seams within the shear zone. The graphite can be traced along surface for approximately 75 metres. Trace amounts of fine- to medium-grained pyrite occur as disseminated anhedral grains and rare euhedra within the migmatite. A pronounced, rusty-looking gossan has developed on the surface of the migmatitic rocks hosting the occurrence. Biotite, which is detrimental to the potential of the occurrence as a source for flake graphite, constitutes approximately 5% of the migmatite. Similar flake graphite occurrences occur widely distributed throughout the Quetico Subprovince to the north and east of Manitouwadge (e.g., the Thomas Lake graphite occurrence and the Miller graphite occurrence). To date, none of these occurrences has proved to be economic. A grab sample of rusty-weathering, coarse-grained, strongly foliated, graphitic (containing up to 20%), pyritic, biotite-quartz-feldspar schist collected from the occurrence in 1991 by D.B. McKay for the OGS returned assay values of nil Au and trace Ag (Resident Geologist's files, Beardmore-Geraldton District,Thunder Bay).
