Point Location Description: No surface expression of occurrence. Location inferred from magnetic data and drilling

Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: A reservoir where a boat may be launched is approximately 130 km from Smooth Rock Falls, via Hwy 805 to Fraserdale where a gravel road leads NW to the dam site [on the Mattagami River]. The northern contact of the complex lies 10 km to the south of the boat landing (from Study 37, p.4). A small plane is able to land on the western branch of the Kapuskasing river mouth immediately adjacent to the [former] camp (T-565). The carbonatite zone lies on the west bank of the Kapuskasing River approximately 3.5 km south of where it joins the Mattagami River.

Geology

Province: Kapuskasing Structural Zone

Geological Age: Late Precambrian   Geochronological Age: 1072 MA RB/SR   Geochron. Age Ref.: MP093, p.22

Geology Comments

Feb 03, 2016 (D Draper) - Syenitic rocks of Clay-Howells alkalic complex appear to intrude a sequence of paragneisses and orthogneisses that have been regionally metamorphosed to upper amphibolite to granulite facies rank...characteristic of the Kapuskasing Subprovince. The complex [itself] is fresh and unmetamorphosed.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Ferro-Carbonatite 1 Magnetite-Rich Host
Syenite 2 Syenite To Monzonite Contains

Lithology Comments

Feb 03, 2016 (D Draper) - A dike-like body of magnetite-rich carbonatite intrudes the syenitic rocks within the SE corner of the complex. Drilling indicates this body approaches to within 5m of surface, but does not outcrop. Syenitic rocks bordering the carbonatite have been altered and metasomatized and display granoblastic textures.

Mineralization Comments

Feb 03, 2016 (D Draper) - Within the main area of mineralization the carbonatite varies from 10 to 80% magnetite. Examination of polished sections identified the presence of ilmenite lamellae within the magnetite. Trace amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite are present and occur in close association with the magnetite. Spectrographic study indicated anomalous quantities of niobium, zinc, molybdenum and tin. Niobium in the mineral pyrochlore is the only anomalous element occurring as a recognizable mineral. // From analyses of 25 samples by OGS Geoscience Laboratories, Toronto, 1988 (ppm): Nb--over 2000; Zn--up to 4500; Sn--up to 930; Mo--up to 85; Y--up to 1000; Ce--up to 6500; La--up to 3000.

Nov 15, 2011 (A Wilson) - Results from the 2010 drilling include intersections up to 105.3 metres grading 57.83% Fe2O3, 0.694%TREO and 0.14% Nb2O5. Higher grade Rare Earth zones within the magnetite include 2.45% TREO over 4.9 metres. The average cumulative drilled widths of the magnetite zone, which appears to be represented as two main lenses, is approximately 67 metres. The amount of Heavy Rare Earths within the Total Rare Earths varies from 5% to 20% with an average of 10%. Significant assays from the Rare Earth Metals drilling program included: 0.450% total rare earth oxides (TREO) over 142.5 m, including 0.230% TREO over 5.9 m, and 1.1010% TREO over 10m in CH-01. Other significant assays include: 0.660 %TREO over 19.4 m, including 1.050% TREO over 4.2 m; 1.20 % TREO over 13.9 m including 2.120 % TREO over 3.9 m in CH-2; and 0.850% TREO over 35 m, including 2.06 % TREO over 6.5 m; and 0.54 % TREO over 27 m in CH-17.
