Geology

Province: Paleozoic and Mesozoic Basins

Subprovince: Moose River Basin

Geological Age: Paleozoic

Geology Comments

Mar 20, 2014 (D Draper) - At Coral Rapids, cliffs showing the Moose River and Abitibi River [later Kwataboahegan Fm] limestones can be followed for several hundred feet. The two formations appear to be rather sharply divided, although no angular discordance exists nor any distinct erosional unconformity.

Lithology Comments

Mar 20, 2014 (D Draper) - At Coral Rapids the limestone forms cliffs about 40 feet high, extending for 300 yards or more on both sides of the river. The formation varies from pure to somewhat magnesian limestone.

Oct 21, 2009 (A Wilson) - In 2008, Canadian Orebodies Ltd. drilled a fence of 9 diamond drill holes along the western side of the Abitibi River in Valentine Township. Their exploration program intersected approximately 15 m of limestone overlying the Sextant Formation

Mineralization Comments

Mar 20, 2014 (D Draper) - GSC analysis of a hand sample taken from a 25 foot section of massive limestone (east bank of Rapids) returned 95.46% calcium carbonate. Dyer notes that (quote): wherever the Abitibi River formation outcrops the limestone appears to be highly calcareous. Analyses of a hand sample from the west bank returned 97.57%. Two further samples taken more recently, returned 95.71 and 96.60% CaCO3.

Mar 20, 2014 (A Wilson) - Industrial mineral testing completed in 2009 indicated that the stone was suitable for use in a rotary kiln for lime production.
