Point Location Description: Centre of Mattagami River at foot of Grand Rapids (east end of rapids)

Location Method: Other Literature

Access Description: By river, approximately 110 miles north of Mattagami railway station. Via Coral Rapids: from mileage 96 on the Moosonee branch of the Ontario Northland Railway, a 14-mile long winter road runs diagonally across Kilmer Twp. to Mattagami R. Or, from ONR mileage 112, an old road ran westward to an old lumber camp on the Onakawana R. This road was apparently extended by Dewson Mines in 1949 to access their drill site on the Mattagami on the south bank of the river, just west of the iron ore zone at the head of Grand Rapids. (1949, AF T-405).

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Draper) - At Grand Rapids beds of Abitibi River limestone outcrop on both sides of the Mattagami for a distance of two miles. The rock is gray-buff in coulour, semi-crystalline and porous. On the north side at the head of the rapids the beds have an apparent dip of 1 degree upstream. Structurally there is a well developed east-west jointing which suggests regional folding. (AF T-405).

Lithology Comments

Mar 19, 2014 (D Draper) - The mineralization (limonite) appears to occupy irregular openings, cracks and cavities in the limestone. The mineralized zone at the foot of the rapids outcrops on both banks of river and runs beneath it in a zone 1000 to 1500 feet in width approximately; this zone is separated from the main one at the head of the rapids (to the west) by roughly 8000ft of barren limestone. Extent of mineralization away from the river could not be determined due to heavy drift. Goodwin (1956) identified 4 mineralized zones exposed along the shoreline ranging from 20 to 50 feet in width and up to 20 feet in thickness.

Mineralization Comments

Mar 19, 2014 (D Draper) - The iron showing at the foot of the rapids consists of limonite only, ranging from massive to botryoidal and vuggy. Early chip sampling this of secondary zone (north shore) returned from 35.37% (over 300ft) to 52.45% Fe (average of best ore). Goodwin reported a chip sample taken over 120ft along the south shore returned 43.05% Fe. The occurrence at the foot of the rapids was considered to be more promising than that at the head of the rapids due to the potential for siderite to exist beneath the exposed limonite.
