Geology

Province: Paleozoic and Mesozoic Basins

Subprovince: Moose River Basin

Geological Age: Paleozoic

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Draper) - Gypsum occurrences of the Moose River Basin are considered part of the lower Middle Devonian Moose River Formation. (GSC MEM 379, p.90). The beds here are composed almost entirely of greyish crystalline gypsum with spots of brownish selenite and are not so cavernous or pillared as the beds further upstream, but occur as sloping banks. Maximum thickness is about 13 feet. (AR Vol 37-6, p.41).

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Draper) - [Q] Outcrops consist of 10-15 feet of gypsum-limestone breccia which overlie 4 feet of wavy-bedded, resinous-brown and white, coarsely recrystallized selenitic gypsum. Underlying this is massive, medium-grained, white gypsum, containing numerous eyes and healed fractures of recrystallized brown selenite and minor thin limey laminae. (MDC 26, p.119).
