Primary Commodities: Clay, Silica Sand

Secondary Commodities: Lignite

Location

Township or Area: Habel, Hambly

Latitude: 50° 21' 36.57"    Longitude: -82° 40' 52.52"

UTM Zone: 17    Easting: 380415.04   Northing: 5580027.13    UTM Datum: NAD83

Resident Geologist District: Timmins

NTS Grid: 42J07SE

Point Location Description: Hole located at conjunction of winter road & north bank Soweska R. (on Hambly/Habel border).

Location Method: Other Literature

Access Description: Hwy 11 to Smooth Rock Falls; 75km north to Fraserdale on Hwy 634; Ontario Hydro's private road to Smoky Falls then north via winter road. Helicopter recommended for summer access. (Note: Plot of winter road on 1977 series EMR topographic maps 42J/7 and 42J/2 (Soweska River and Friday Creek) not in agreement with ODM/OGS documentation; road appears to be shifted half a township too far to the west on these NTS sheets. OFR 5148, Pt.2, Plate 7 shows road running northwest through Hambly Twp., not Amery Twp.).

Exploration History

1972: Algocen Mines Limited - Geological data compilation and aerial photographic analysis. 1975: Ontario Division of Mines: Winter road construction; drilling; geophysical surveys (seismic and resistivity); palynological studies. circa-1981: Geoscience Laboratories, OGS: Analyses of samples from 1975 drill program. 1981-83: Ontario Energy Resources Ltd./ONEXCO -Occurrence site within Exploratory License of Occupation

Geology

Province: Paleozoic and Mesozoic Basins

Subprovince: Moose River Basin

Geological Age: Mesozoic   Geochronological Age: Cretaceous    Geochron. Age Ref.: S021

Geology Comments

Mar 23, 2014 (D Draper) - Lower Cretaceous (Middle to Upper Albian) sediments consisting of white, fine to coarse grained, pure quartz sands interbedded with thin horizons of white, red, yellow and light brown kaolinitic clay.

Lithology

Lignite 4 Is

Lithology Comments

Mar 23, 2014 (D Draper) - Lignite fragments were encountered in hole 75-11-01 (vertical to 46m) from 14.8 to 19.7m, in association with grey clay and fine quartz sand. Lignite bearing beds are underlain by another 26.5m of silica sand, kaolin, and fireclay devoid of lignite. The upper 15m of sediments are predominantly white quartz sand interbedded with minor amounts of clay. Lower portion of sediments contain reddish-brown kaolinitic clay interspersed with quartz silt and sand.

Mineralization Comments

Mar 23, 2014 (D Draper) - Analysis of 3 samples of the white quartz sand yielded up to 97.2% SiO2 with Al2O3 ranging from 1.4 to 2.5% and Fe2O3 0.2-0.3%. Samples of the clay tested as P.C.E. of 31/32 (high duty fireclay) with Al2O3 of 15.1 - 23.9%. Samples exhibited only low to medium plasticity however.
