Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - In the Attawapiskat area there are both Early Jurassic and Proterozoic kimberlites. The early Jurassic kimberlites are centred at approximately latitude 52 45N and 83 50 W. These kimberlites occur along the Winisk River fault trend and occur where this fault splays toward James Bay. The kimberlite distribution pattern is elongated northwest along the Winisk River fault, parallel to the NW trend of the Proterozoic Sutton Inlier (120 km north of Attawapiskat). The Early Jurassic kimberlites lie just south of the NE trending Cape Henrietta Maria Arch.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The kimberlite is described as a combination of globular segregationary kimberlite and hypabyssal macrocrystic kimberlite. It contains basement xenoliths, indicator mineral megacrysts and olivine-pyroxene or olivine-pyroxene-garnet nodules. The xenoliths reach a maximum size of 5 x 6 cm with the basement xenoliths being much larger than the mantle xenoliths. The garnet chemistry dispalys a population of G-10 garnets although most garnets fall in the G-9 field. No chromite grains lie in the diamond inclusion field. The ilmenite displays a more limited range in composition than ilmenite from most imberlites.
