Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Sachigo

Terrane: North Caribou

Geological Age: Archean

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Proterozoic kimberlites have been found within the Sachigo Subprovince. The distribution of these intrusions appears to be random but restricted to the Sachigo. The age of these intrusions makes them coeval with the Mid continent Rift (Lake Superior Basin) and the tectonic and/or alkalic rock magmatism along the Kapuskasing Structural Zone and the Grenville Front.

Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Kimberlite-Unsubdivided 1 Host
Limestone 2 Hanging Wall
Gneiss-Unsubdivided 3 Footwall

Lithology Comments

Oct 21, 2009 (A Wilson) - The intrusion is interpreted to be Proterozoic in age and subcrops beneath overburden and Paleozoic rocks. The Paleozoic rocks consist of calcareous dolomite, siltstone, sandstone, shale, limestone, cherty dolomite and dolomite. The kimberlite consists of weathered hypabyssal kimberlite and diatreme facies kimberlite. Xenoliths of granitic basement rock have been noted in felsic intrusive rocks with dikes of kimberlite up to 4 m wide were intersected between 401 and 458 m in DR 96-61. Possible diatreme facies were observed between 161.3 and 200.2 m where abundant highly altered, small xenoliths were observed. Mantle nodules are present in both hypabyssal and diatreme facies.

Mineralization Comments

Oct 21, 2009 (A Wilson) - A total of 17 diamonds comprising 13 micro diamonds, 2 macro diamonds and 2 commercial stones (1,292,575 ct total wt) were recovered from 10 samples weighing 919.6 kg. The average grade of the deposit is 0.014 cpht. The two largest diamonds that were recovered are both less than 1mm in greatest dimension.
