Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Sachigo

Terrane: North Caribou

Geological Age: Archean

Geology Comments

Oct 20, 2009 (A Wilson) - Proterozoic kimberlites have been found within the Sachigo Subprovince. The distribution of these intrusions appears to be random but restricted to the Sachigo. The age of these intrusions makes them coeval with the Mid continent Rift (Lake Superior Basin) and the tectonic and/or alkalic rock magmatism along the Kapuskasing Structural Zone and the Grenville Front.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Lamproite-Unsubdivided 1 Lamproite Host
Limestone 2 Hanging Wall

Lithology Comments

Oct 20, 2009 (A Wilson) - The Kyle No. 5 intrusion has been identifed as a lamproite not a true kimberlite. The drill log identifies it as a diatreme facies rock overlain by limestone and underlain by granitic gneiss. The intrusion is assumed to be Proterozic since it lies beneath Paleozoic rocks and has a similar magnetic expression comparable to those found associated with Proterozoic kimberlite.
