Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Sachigo

Terrane: North Caribou

Geological Age: Archean

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Proterozoic kimberlites have been found within the Sachigo Subprovince. The distribution of these intrusions appears to be random but restricted to the Sachigo. The age of these intrusions makes them coeval with the Mid continent Rift (Lake Superior Basin) and the tectonic and/or alkalic rock magmatism along the Kapuskasing Structural Zone and the Grenville Front.

Lithology Comments

Oct 20, 2009 (A Wilson) - The kimberlite is described as being a kimberlite dike displaying an elongated magnetic signature. The logs indicate a serpentinized and carbonatized hypabyssal kimberlite locally logged as crater facies. The logs indicate an alternating sequence of kimberlite dikes and granitic gneiss. The logs note the presence of serpentinized xenoliths along with locally numerous gneiss xenoltiths. The Kyle No. 3 kimberlite body has been interpreted as consisting of multiple intrusions of kimberlite, some of which appear to be barren of diamonds and others which are diamond enriched.

Mineralization Comments

Oct 20, 2009 (A Wilson) - Lakefield Research completed analyses on the initial core (DR95-40 to 43) recovering 175 diamonds from 681.1 kg of core. Most stones were described as clear and white. Larger stones included a clear, slightly yellowish-white fragmented dodecahedron measuring 1.36 x 0.68 x 0.35 mm and weighing 578,592 octacarats. A total of 1733 stones weighing 93.006 mg were recovered from 3601.7 kg of kimberlite. There is a zone of diamond enrichment within the main kimberlite body where the grades are up to 2.53 cpht over a 6 m section. This zone was intersected in DR 95-42, DR 95-43 and Ashton DDH 95-1B
