Lithology Comments

Feb 28, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - The island is underlain by shales of the Rove Formation intruded by a diabase sill and a wide gabbroic dyke, which forms a prominent ridge along the NW side of the island. Pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite are disseminated irregularly in the gabbro near the NE end of the island (Shklanka, 1969).

Mineralization Comments

Feb 28, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - Massive to weakly disseminated copper-nickel sulphide mineralization with associated iron-titanium oxide phases are scattered throughout the gabbro dike as pods, blebs, and specks of pyrrhotite with minor chalcopyrite. Grab samples, taken by several OGS employees over the years along the north shore of the island at several localities yielded values ranging from 0.14 to 0.53% Cu, trace to 0.29% Ni, and up to 0.02 ounces per ton precious metals, mainly palladium. According to assessment data and to a report in the Northern Miner (1969), the following intersections were obtained by the diamond drillhole program in 1964: Hole No. 10, drilled at 30 degrees in a direction S45W, intersected 18.3 m of disseminated sulphide mineralization from 0.3-18.6 m, averaging 0.43% Cu and 0.16% Ni in addition to some precious metal values up to 0.02 ounces Au per ton. Two other holes reportedly intersected 0.28% Cu and 0.14% Ni over 16.8 m and 0.23% Cu and 0.11% Ni over 15.4 m respectively (Geul, 1973).
