Mar 10, 2020 (Andrew Tims) - The amethyst mineralization occurs in silicified, brecciated zones associated with east-west trending faults and contacts within granite of the Penassen Lake Stock. It would appear that a contact between barren granite and the mineralized granite and amethyst breccia/massive vein amethyst has been identified on the north edge of the work area.
Mar 10, 2020 (Therese Pettigrew) - Amethyst veins occur within Archean Penassen granite, which is a dark pink, very uniform rock. The amethyst is in massive veins, which strike at 90 degrees. The system can be traced along strike for about 200 m. The vein, where exposed, is about 15 m wide. The main breccia zone strikes at 250 degrees Amethyst varies in colour from dark purple to green, and the massive amethyst is finely banded (Thunder Bay office RGP mineral deposit files). Bugs and open spaces within the veins are lined with amethyst points up to 6 cm in diameter. Dark, almost black amethyst occurs in places where black, radioactive minerals are visible in the granite. Near the veins, the granite has been altered to light cream colour due to kaolinization of the feldspar. Quartz veining is very prominent to the point of silica flooding; in some outcrops anastomosing quartz veins completely mask the rock (Garland, 1994).
