Access Description: GENERAL LOCATION: The quarry is located approximately 52 km northeast of Thunder Bay in the west half of Lot 3, Conc. 4, Dorion Twp. ACCESS: The deposit lies approximately 400 m west of the railway on an ascending slope with granite hills to the north and south. The stone is 1.8 km from navigable waters in Black Bay, Lake Superior.



Exploration History

1890: Duncan McEachren discovered this marble deposit early in this year. With the hope of developing the property, he brought possible investors from Winnipeg and Duluth. 1891: The property was secured by the Black Bay Mine and Quarry Co. of Duluth. Test blocks were removed and shipped to the companies head office in Chicago. 1892: It was reported that the newly formed Lake Superior Jasper Company was going to have a lot of success with the Mahogany-Stone deposit. However, there are no reports on further development or sales from the site.

Dec 07, 2005 (W Bellinger) - GENERAL GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE: The area is underlain by Mesoproterozoic Sibley Group calcareous sediments that have been intruded by diabase sills and dikes. JOINTING: Near the surface, the company was able to quarry blocks that were 1 to 1.5 m thick, 1 to 1.5 m wide and 1.5 to 2 m long. COLOUR: The stone is a mottled light orange-red colour. TEXTURE: The stone is fine grained.

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS: Sample No. 85MCK-0013: 15.58 SiO2, 2.03 Al2O3, 0.56 Fe2O3, 0.35 MnO, 35.58 MgO, 44.78 CaO, 0.05 Na2O, 0.92 K2O, 0.05 TiO2, 0.09 P2O5. Analyses by Geoscience Laboratory, Ontario Geological Survey, Toronto.
