Feb 22, 2010 (C Ravnaas) - Grade: maximum assays of 27.0-39.18 g/t Au. Thomson reported in 1934 that gold could be panned from a rust zone on two claims, K 2549 and 2550, on the north shore of Straw Lake and owned by Edward Konigson. A shaft was sunk 40 feet on the zone. At a depth of thirty feet the zone was reported to be 9 feet wide and to carry commercial values in gold. A grab sample of heavily mineralized sulphide ore, from the shaft, taken by Thomson, assayed 2.65 ounces of gold per ton. In 1933 the showing was examined by Wm. ('Hardrock' Bill) Smith and optioned by him to T.H. Rea, of Toronto. The amount of work carried out under this option is not known; the option was dropped the following year. In the ODM report for 1935 Thomson mentions this property but only to say no work had been done that year due to an ownership dispute concerning certain adjoining claims. Sylvanite Gold Mines Ltd. drilled 6 holes in 1945 for a total of 1,122 ft. Shaft samples taken gave assays of 0.02 to 0.80 oz/t Au across 12.5 ft. In 1981, Ontario Geological Survey assumed a zone 460 ft x 6 ft to 25 ft containing possible tonnage of 5,600 t at 0.40 oz/t Au. The adjacent Straw Lake Beach Vein may dip into Konigson ground below 700 ft (Historical Files NW00038, EMR#502569, Kenora Resident Geologist Office) The claims are underlain by mafic and felsic lavas, which have been intruded by massive quartz porphyries. The rock assemblage is of Early Precambrian age and belongs to Superior Strucuural Province. The gold mineralization, which is thought to be related to porphyries is found with quartz in narrow, rusty shear zones on the contact between chlorite schist and quartz porphyry. The 6 m (20 ft) wide of strong shearing strikes 280° and was traced 140 m (450 ft). Vein material, which widens to 2.7 m (9 ft) at a depth of 9 m (30 ft) consists of quartz, carbonate and schist, all heavily mineralized with pyrite and traces of chalcopyrite, along with gold. A grab sample of this heavily mineralized sulphide ore assayed 90.9 g/tonne (2.65 oz/ton) Au. Shaft sample reported 0.7 - 27.4 g/t (0.02 - 0.80 oz/ton) across 3.7 m (12.2 ft).
