Jan 20, 2014 (A Wilson) - Freshly broken rock specimens show a dense, black slatelike groundmass. At irregularly located zones in the rock, spherical cavities occur which may be up to ½ inch in diameter. Most of these cavities are empty but some are filled with flake graphite. In the Sulcan Lake area, the vesicles also may be filled with pyrite or marcasite. The spherical cavities are often enclosed by a narrow rim of quartz.

Jan 20, 2014 (A Wilson) - A grab sample collected by the ODM in 1934 assayed 92.10% SiO2, 2.61% Al2O3, 0.13% Fe2O3, 1.58% FeO, 0.30 MgO, 0.33 CaO, 0.14%Na2O, 0.25% K2O, 0.29% H2O, 0.05%TiO2, trace P2O5, 0.02% MnO, 0.30% CO2, 1.98% C and 0.35%S. Total carbon is reported as CO2 at 63.7%. This is equivalent to 17.4%C. Carbonate carbon was also determined; the value found was 0.52% CO2. Thus the net amount of graphitic carbon is 17.2% CO2.
