Exploration History

1935: News Report: 'Plan Development of Caviar Lake Property' - 'Another Lake of the Woods property which created attention some 35 years ago, is to get renewed development by a group of Kenora men, who have formed a syndicate to explore a group of claims at Caviar Lake.' 'In a relatively small amount of work by the new developers the property has disclosed one vein for a length of 200 feet on surface, and a 20-foot test pit has been sampled. Surface width of 22 inches returned values of as high as $48.50 (au. 20.67), and it is stated none of the samples taken along the fracture gave a blank in assaying. Pit samples indicated improvement in vein structure and with values sustained.' [The Daily Times Journal, Saturday, June 8, 1935, pg.10] (Kenora Historical File 52FI05NE00003, Caviar Lake) 1956: E. Krisko diamond-drilled two short holes on a north-trending quartz vein east of the main vein. 1986: Electromagnetic, magnetic, and geological surveys were conducted for claims owner, Roy A. Martin. 1988: Property Visit by M..R. Hailstone (MNDM) and grab samples were taken from the showing - see 'Deposit Comment - Mineralization' for assay results. (MP.142 - ROA 1988, pg. 36 Krisko)

Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Precambrian

Lithology Comments

Feb 15, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - 'Quartz veins are present in north to northwest trending shear zones in granodioritic rocks, about 1,500 feet (450m) north of the eastern end of East Bay, caviar Lake. These shear zones do not appear on the geological map. The largest exposed vein, lying partly in adjacent metavolcanics (not on map), has been trenched along a length of about 300 feet (6m). Pyrite is present in the quartz and in thin carbonate stringers, and along some slip surfaces in the granitic rocks.' (GR.111, pg.39)

Mineralization Comments

Feb 15, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - Best assay results from grab samples by M.R. Hailstone: 14.74 ppm Au and 1750 ppm Cu (MP.142 - ROA 1988, pg.35 - Table 2.5) 'Assay grab samples arew reported to contain up to 0.4 ounce of gold per ton (A. Gauthier, personal communication).' (GR.111, pg.39) 'Surface width of 22 inches returned values of as high as $48.50 (au. 20.67), and it is stated none of the samples taken along the fracture gave a blank in assaying. Pit samples indicated improvement in vein structure and with values sustained.' (Kenora Historical File 52F/05NE00003, Caviar Lake -article: 'The Daily Times Journal, June 8, 1935 ')
