Exploration History

1902-1908 Empire Gold Mining and Milling Co. - cutting and shaft sinking (2 shafts: northern shaft @ 12' deep & southern shaft @ 15' deep). A mill was erected winter of 1907. * see Deposit Comment - Mineralization for production figures. 1930 Evidence was found of considerable clearing with a number of camp buildings beside the lake and a 5-stamp mill built of logs set farther back at the foot of a slope on which two shallow shafts had been put down without power machinery. The south shaft, situated about 180' north of the mill, was sunk on a rusty sheared zone in greenstone. At the north shaft, which was about 540' farther north, the vein is an injected part of a sheared porphyry of more acid appearance. An assay of a fairly mineralized sample yielded $11.60 per ton in gold (approx. > .50 opt Au). Neither of these samples could be taken by channelling across the vein, and it is assumed that samples so made would show considerably lower gold content. The north shaft is 12 and the south shaft about 15 feet in depth. An open cut was made from the latter westward along the vein for a short distance. The mill was operated for a brief period on these surface ores, but it is now in a much dilapidated condition.' (Kenora Historical File 52F/05NE00013, Violet - ODM Vol. 42, Prt 4, pg. 79)

Geology Comments

Feb 15, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - 'Archean basic metavolcanics and diorite bodies strike northeast. A granite stock occurs about ¾ mile to the west. Work was on two veins in shear zones in metavolcanics, the northern strikes N40ºE, the southern at a distance of 540 feet strikes S75ºE. the quartz contains pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and some gold.' Lithology Comments

Feb 15, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - 'The vein-stone as seen on the dump consisted of schist injected with quartz of a fine granular texture. Much pyrite is present, but no visible gold. The quartz has a sugary texture and is mineralized with pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in cracks in the quartz or replacing the schisted porphyry. It appears that for the most part the mineralization that can be inferred as being derived from the Flora Lake granite lies mainly along the eastern margin of that body.'
