Exploration History

'The earliest recorded work in the area of Turtle Lake was done in 1952 by Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited. Mag and geological surveys were conducted on an 8-claim group north of Turtle Lake. About 1,100 feet northeast of the lake, five trenches were sunk on a rusty zone but assays were discouraging, and the claims were dropped. In July 1955, part of this area, extending from Shoulder Island, Atikwa Lake to and including the 8 claims at Turtle Lake, was re-staked. This block of claims was sold to Apex Consolidated Resources Limited. The claims were prospected and some trenching was done by Apex, and the drilling commenced in October 1955 on a northwest-trending sulphide occurrence in andesite, about 4,000 feet east of the Maybrun “B” zone. The two holes drilled did not intersect significant mineralization. From 1955 to 1956, 52 diamond drill holes totalling 13,393 feet were put down. After an idle period and two name changes, Apex became “Abacon Developments Limited on March 1963, but financial difficulties arose and the company was dissolved in 1967. Lithology Comments

Feb 15, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - 'Spotty disseminated chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite occur almost entirely in a pod-shaped mafic intrusive body in greenstone. Mineralization is most abundant where a diorite phase overlies the amphibolite phase of the intrusion. There are also occurrences of sulphide in agglomerate and greenstone on the property with low copper and gold values. (ODM, 1969, MRC12, p.159)

Mineralization Comments

Feb 15, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - From 1955 to 1956, 32 diamond drill holes totalling 13,393 feet were put down. The best intersections showed 1.08% Cu and 0.62% Ni over 25 feet and 0.51% Cu and 0.98% Ni over 12 feet. The highest gold values were 0.05 oz./ton. The work indicated that the zone was about 500 feet long and continued to a depth of 600 feet. (Kenora Historical File 52F/05NE, Wright-Hargreaves - document CU 7 & Kenora AF 52F/05NE, A-1, Apex - drilling map) 'Grab samples of mineralized rock from each of the five trenches were combined for assay. Only a trace of gold was found and no copper was detected.' (GR.111, p.51)
