Location Method: Conversion from MDI

Access Description: Reached most easily by float aircraft from bases at Kenora, Fort Frances or Dryden, ON. A twenty mile long winter road exists from Sioux narrows on the Kenora-Fort Frances Hwy. 71 to Atikwa Lake via Dogpaw and Caviar Lakes, and a summer route follows much the same course.

Exploration History

'The company acquired the Atikwa Lake properties in 1955 from Carl Palangio'. 'Both groups of claims (Taurcanis North and South) have been prospected and they were mapped geologically by Mr. H.D. Carlson (October 18-31, 1956). The results of his mapping are covered in his report under date of November 12, 1956. Also in 1956, an electromagnetic survey was made of the parts of the properties underlain by lavas and volcanics. This work was done by G.G.I. Surveys Limited and is covered in their report dated January 07, 1957. Diamond drilling wwas performed on the claims on two occasions. The first was in 1955 when a total of 812 feet was completed for assessment purposes. This drilling was largely in the granites and no significant results were obtained. Later, in the spring of 1957, after the geophysical survey and the geologic mapping a further 1,757 feet of drilling in four holes was finished. This work investigated anomalous conditions on both groups of claims. No further work has been done.' (Kenora AF 52F/05NE, V-3, Taurcanis Mines Ltd. - Company Report, pg.22 - Economic Geology)

Geology Comments

Feb 16, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - 'The Kenbridge, Maybrun and Taurcanis properties all lie close to the east boundary of a wide northeast-southwest trending belt of predominantly volcanic rocks which are inter-banded with small zones of metasedimentary rocks, and intruded in many places by small plugs, dikes and irregular masses of both mafic and granitic rocks. This belt of volcanics, metasediments and intrusives is bounded on the east by a large batholith of granitic rocks; the contact between these two masses runs southwest from the northeast corner of Populus Lake to the north end of Horn bay, across the Taurcanis ground, then turns south roughly following the Taurcanis west boundary into Head Bay, then turns east-southeast roughly to parallel the south shore of Atikwa Lake. Thus, the Maybrun and Taurcanis properties straddle the nose of a granite batholith where this penetrates into a large volcanic belt. (Kenora AF 52F/05NE, V-3, Taurcanis Mines Limited - Geology Report, pg.3)

Lithology Comments

Feb 16, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - 'On the Taurcanis north group the electromagnetic survey has indicated an anomaly in the volcanics about 500 feet west of the granite contact, trending N30ºE and showing a length of 2,800 feet. In order to check this indication of possible sulphide mineralization hole No. TA-1 was drilled from the southeast corner of claim 17657 northwestward across the anomaly. A 15 foot intersection in this hole between footage 347 and 362 was heavily carbonatized, cut by numerous veinlets and carried pyrite with a small quantity of chalcopyrite. No appreciable copper values were obtained.' (Kenora AF 52F/05NE, V-3, Taurcanis Mines Ltd. - Company Report, pg.22 - Economic Geology)

Mineralization Comments

Feb 16, 2011 (J Bongfelt) - 'The ore possibilities in the area are indicated by a copper iron gossan with chalcopyrite and gold associated, or as a disseminated chalco and pyrrhotite cement surrounding the pillow lavas. Two zones of gossan were located but mineralization was very light. The larger zone was found on the S.E. corner of the lake (claim K.17657) overlooking the dam, and the other along the top edge of the shear zone on claim K.17655. No other mineralized zones were located in this examination but due to the presence of considerable mossy overburden over almost all the outcrops except cliff faces, the possibility of others being found should not be ignored.' (Kenora AF 52F/05NE, V-3, Taurcanis Mines Ltd. - Geological Report, 1955) * D.D. records confirm that no grade assay results were obtained for the Taurcanis North - Horn Bay area. (Kenora AF 52F/05NE, V-2, Taurcanis Mines Limited, Atikwa Lake - diamond drill records/sketches)
