Exploration History

1903: Work started in fall of this year. 1904: Owned by the Northern Development Company. High grade ore at 100 ft. level. 1905: Shaft to 200 ft with short cross-cuts at 100 and 200 ft levels. 1906: Shaft 241 ft with 163 ft of development at the 200 ft. level. New machinery installed. 1907: Work continued. 1908: Shaft 300 ft. deep. No additional work on first level but a second and third level under development. 1909: Northern Development Company are still owners. More second hand third level drifting. 1910: Operations at the mine ceased entirely after a month’s mill run was run through the new mill. Total mine workings are vague but appear to be 325 ft. deep, 335 ft. cross cutting, 610 ft. drifting, 110 ft. in 2 raises. (Property Visit, File F07NE00009, J. Parker, 1985, Kenora Resident Geologist Office) 2010-14: Manitou Gold conducted an IP survey and drilled 104 DDH totaling 19,445 m. 2013: Manitou Gold conducted an exploration program including geochemical surveys, trenching, structural mapping and channel sampling. 2018: Manitou Gold Inc. completed a diamond drill program consisting of 16 drill holes totaling 2,078 m, assaying and analyses. 2022: Manitou Gold Inc. sold the property to Dryden Gold Corp. 2023-2024: Dryden Gold Corp. completed a diamond drill program consisting of 13 drill holes totaling 1,613 m.

Lithology Comments

Feb 24, 2010 (C Ravnaas) - Early Precambrian mafic volcanic rocks and porphyritic diabases form country rocks for NE - striking lenticular quartz veins, containing bands of schistose material. The rock assemblage belongs to Superior Structural Province. Two parallel veins occur 9 metres apart and are 05 - 0.6 metre wide on surface, with No. 2 vein reported 3.3 metre wide on the 61 metre level. These veins carry little pyrite and apparently low gold values. A grab sample of quartz taken from the dump in 1933, assayed $.20/ton of gold. A one month test run was made in the ten-stamp mill in 1910. There is no record of the bullion which was recovered. (Historical File F07NE00009, SMDR#001417, Kenora Resident Geologist Office)

Mineralization Comments

Feb 24, 2010 (C Ravnaas) - 10 stamp mill. The Paymaster mine at Gold Rock, on Upper Manitou Lake, was adjacent to the east side of the Big Master property (52 F/1. Au 3). It was on an 83 acre location, H.W. 20, and was owned by the Northern Development Co. of Detroit and operated by them from 1903 to 1910. A vertical shaft was sunk 99.0 metres on one of two lenticular quartz veins which were 9.1 metres apart and had a northeast strike direction. The No. 1 vein was 1.5 ft. to 2 ft. wide on the surface, and while the No. 2 vein could not be seen on surface by Thomson in 1933, it was reported to be 11 ft. wide at the 200 ft. level. Levels were established at 100 ft., 200 ft., and 300 ft., and about 200 feet of cross-cutting and drifting were done on each of the lower two levels. There are no figures available for the tenor of the ore although a grab sample taken from the dump by Thomson in 1933 assayed $0.20 gold/ton. A 10-stamp mill was erected in 1910 and a test run was made for a period of one month atfer which the entire operation was closed down. Mar 06, 2024 (Sheree Hinz) - Drilling done by Dryden Gold Corp. in 2023 intersected a new high-grade shoot on Big Master One with drill hole KW-23-018 intersecting 6.66 g/t Au over 4.30 m, including 44.80 g/t Au over 0.27 m. Drill hole KW-23-007 intersected 20.93 g/t Au over 0.69 m including 36.70 g/t Au over 0.39 m (Dryden Gold Corp. Press Release February 21, 2024).
