Exploration History

1918: the mine was acquired by Contact Bay Mines, Ltd. 1919: a two compartment shaft was sunk 15 feet. 1920: the shaft was deepened to 88 feet and drifting and raising were done. 1921: the shaft was deepened further to 170 feet; by 1922, the shaft was 290 feet deep; and, in 1923 it was 333 feet deep. The ore was treated in the 25 ton, 10-stamp mill at the Redeemer mine. 1923: 915 tons of ore were reported milled, for production of 144 oz of gold, and this ore was thought (Satterly) to have come from the Bonanza. 1926: the mine was acquired by Bonanza United Mines, Limited. · Bonanza United Mines, Limited owned several properties in the southeast corner of Van Horne township. Options to some of the properties were let to different companies but the results of all this work must have been disappointing since no further work was reported. · OGS assumes a zone 600 ft. x 1.5 ft. to 300 ft. with estimated possible tonnage 22,500 t at 0.20 oz/t Au and speculative 11,250 t at 0.20 oz/t Au to 450 ft. This may be liable to wallrock dilution of 10%-15%. (Kenora Property Visit File 52F10NW00002 - Bonanza - File #1, 1986 - MDI Record) The Bonanza deposit was developed with a 2-compartment shaft with levels at 85, 170, and 268 ft. There were a total of 416, 624, and 51 ft of development on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd levels, respectively. A raise was also driven to surface from the 1st level and a new hoist station was developed at the bottom of the shaft for planned deepening. Van Horne Exploration conducted surface mapping, sampling, and diamond drilling on the property from 1980-83. A total of 13 drill holes were completed along a strike length of approximately 120m and to a maximum vertical depth of approximately 100m, slightly below the lowest development at 89m. Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Precambrian

Geology Comments

Jun 08, 2010 (J Bongfelt) - The Bonanza Mine is situated within tholeiitic to calc-alkaline, mafic to felsic metavolcanic flows and pyroclastics of the Lower Wabigoon Volcanics which are intruded by numerous felsic and mafic dikes. (OFR 5723 - 1989 - Geology, Gold Mineralization & Property Visits in Dryden-Ignace Area, pg. 173)

Lithology Comments

Jun 08, 2010 (J Bongfelt) - The shaft has been sunk on a narrow shear zone hosting a lenticular, quartz-calcite-tourmaline vein containing -cl/S pyrite. It has been reported that sphalerite, galena, and hematite also occur in the quartz vein. Wallrocks are chloritic, weakly carbonatized, and slightly sericitic. Alteration is restricted to the shear zone, while rocks in the general vicinity of the shaft appear relatively unaltered except for chloritization. An open cut, a few hundred metres west of the shaft, occurs along the strike of the shear zone and quartz vein at the shaft. The open cut was sunk on a northwest-trending, massive, pink, fine- to medium-grained quartz-feldspar porphyry dike. The dike is sericitic, weakly carbonatized, and hosts some narrow quartz veins although most of the vein material has been excavated. (OFR 5723 - 1989 - Geology, Gold Mineralization & Property Visits in Dryden-Ignace Area, pg. 173)

Mineralization Comments

Nov 02, 2010 (J Bongfelt) - Assay results from gold occurrences (MP 128 - ROA 1985, p.38): - grab sample @ 1.42 oz. Au/ton (quartz vein, 2% pyrite - Bonanza Mine-dump) - grab sample @ 0.15 oz. Au/ton (quartz vein, 3% pyrite, chalcopyrite - Bonanza Mine-dump) - grab sample @ 4180 ppm Cu (quartz vein, 3% pyrite, chalcopyrite - Bonanza Mine-dump) - grab sample @ 1740 ppb Au (quartz vein, <1% pyrite - open cut west of Bonanza shaft) Two grab samples of pyritic, quartz vein material taken by the author from the dump, assayed 0.15 ounce gold per ton and 1.42 ounces gold per ton, while a grab sample of the quartz vein in the open cut assayed 1740 ppb gold. Diamond drilling conducted by Van Horne Gold Exploration Incorporated intersected encouraging gold values. A drill indicated tonnage of 5,000 tons averaging 0.25 ounce gold per ton was calculated, with gold values across an average width of l ft. · This proves the showing to be a “prospect”. (OFR 5723 - 1989 - Geology, Gold Mineralization & Property Visits in Dryden-Ignace Area, pg. 173) A total of 1206 tons of ore was mined from two stopes on the 1st and 2nd levels and milled at the Redeemer site to produce 243 oz Au (0.20 oz/t) and 82.75 oz Ag (0.07 oz/t Ag). Van Horne Exploration conducted surface mapping, sampling, and diamond drilling on the property from 1980-83. A total of 13 drill holes were completed along a strike length of approximately 120m and to a maximum vertical depth of approximately 100m, slightly below the lowest development at 89m. A resource of 4,834 tons with a grade of 0.24 oz/t Au and an average width of 0.9 ft (range 0.5-6.6 ft) was delineated within the drilled area, which includes the historic stoped area and the immediate surrounding area. The deepest hole intersected the widest zone (0.29 oz/t Au over 6.6 ft) and the deposit is open along strike and at depth. · This proves the showing to be a “prospect”. (Kenora AF 52F10NW, BBB-1, City of Dryden - Van Horne Area of Interest, 2007 Compilation Report, pg. 32-33) Bonanza - South - A grab sample taken south of the Mine (SE at the bottom of Claim 533304), assayed at 0.07 oz/Ton Au (fine-grained sulphide and magnetite). Geology in this area: intermediate to mafic volcanics; massive and pillowed flows; fragmentals.
