Geology

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Wabigoon

Geological Age: Precambrian

Geology Comments

Apr 15, 2010 (J Bongfelt) - Disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite occur in schistose mafic rock of Early Precambrian age. (Kenora AF 52F10NW, E-1 Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd.)

Lithology

Lithology Comments

Apr 15, 2010 (J Bongfelt) - The sulphides recognized are pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and possibly pentlandite. Certain lenses of rock in the pit do not contain much sulphide but these lenses are small. Some sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite, are associated with small quartz filled veinlets. Gash fractures filled by quartz and carbonate do not contain any sulphides. The sulphides disseminated in the altered gabbro are finer grained and more unifo~ distributed in the southwest part of the pit but the total sulphide content is probably about the same as in the northeast part where the sulphides are coarser. (Kenora AF 52F10NW, E-1 Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd.)

Mineralization Comments

Apr 15, 2010 (J Bongfelt) - A number of chip samples were taken from all exposed bedrock in the pit except the southwesternmost edge. The combined chips assayed 0.76% Cu and 0.29% Nibut contained less than 0.05% Co. Other samples taken by Mr. Pidgeon and several companies contained very similar amounts of copper and nickel but one sample contained 5 dollars per ton cobalt. (Kenora Property Visit File, 52F/10NW00117, Pidgeon)

Nov 24, 2017 (Therese Pettigrew) - Holes drilled by Falconbridge contained 1-8% sulphides including pyrrhotite and pyrite (AFRI 52F10NW0091). On the south shore of Contact Bay, a small island (located approximately at 515400 m E, 5504700 m N) contains disseminated sulphide mineralization (2-4%) of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite hosted by an altered, medium-grained, actinolitic gabbro. To the south of this island, the peninsula is underlain by leucocratic gabbros on the east and more mafic gabbros on the west. Anomalous platinum/palladium values occur on the island near the south shore of Contact Bay, where up to 73 ppb Pt+Pd was returned. At this location, copper and nickel concentrations up to 0.95% and 0.22%, respectively, were also obtained (AFRI 52F10NW2003).
