Jan 30, 2020 (Therese Pettigrew) - Shklanka (1968) describes the occurrence as “Discontinuous, easterly-trending magnetite-quartz iron formation bands with a strike length of 14 miles in Archean metasedimentary schists and gneiss intruded by syenite. Some pyrite and pyrrhotite locally” and “West of Sassafras Lake, preliminary reserve estimates of possible open pit ore, 200 to 500 feet in width and 300 feet in depth, range from 22.3 million tons capable of producing 7.4 million tons of concentrate grading 69% Fe, 3-4% SiO2, to 44 million tons, grading 23-24% mag. Fe, capable of producing 15 million tons of concentrate grading 66% Fe, 5% SiO2.” Drill holes 4 and 5 from 1957 proved that the anomalous area is 400 feet (122 m) wide and made up of 195’ (59.4 m) at 25.35% Fe, 105’ (32 m) of barren syenite, and 100’ (30.5 m) at 30.34% Fe (Assessment report 52G15SE0018). Excalibur Resources’s DDH SL-10-18 intersected 2 magnetite-rich lenses grading 25.0% Fe over 7.09 m and 21.7% Fe over 42.82 m. Abundant diorite, monzodiorite, and syenite dykes were encountered in these zones, with up to a quarter of the core drilled through the iron formation being comprised of dyke material. DDH SL-10-02 intersected a disseminated to stringer sulphide zone that contained 12.8 m averaging 86.6 ppb Au (including 1.28 m averaging 0.42 g/t Au). SL-10-02 also encountered a graphitic tuff containing sphalerite that assayed 0.18% Zn over 1.11 m (Assessment report 20000006201).
