Geology

Province: Southern

Subprovince: Nipigon Basin

Formation Group: Sibley Group

Geological Age: Paleoproterozoic

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (B Schnieders) - The initial discovery was made by Commerce Nickel Mines Ltd. in 1965. Copper mineralization (blue chalcocite) was found within a porous bed of Sibley stromatolite limestone. Minor amounts of galena and native copper were detected in some of the specimens. Float occurrence of the mineralized limestone are present, however diamond drilling failed to produce encouraging results (Coates, 1972). The area is underlain by algal limestone, dolomite and associated shale beds, as well diabase (Coatres, 1972). More recently mafic and ultra mafic intrusive rocks have been mapped at SeaGull and Disraeli Lake.

Lithology Comments

Jan 22, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - Cu-skarn mineralization in Proterozoic Sibley Group stromatolitic, dolostone at the contact with mafic-ultramafic intrusions of the Nipigon embayment (AFRI 20000008063). Mapping by Coates (1972) determined the property is underlain by sub-horizontal to shallow 5 degree east dipping algal stromatolitic dolostones, and calcareous shale of the Rossport Formation that has been intruded by diabase.

Jan 22, 2018 (J Scott) - Chalcocite/malachite in vugs within Sibley Grp stromatolitic limestone, Up to 1.57% Cu in grab samples collected by MNDM staff.

Jan 22, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - Commerce Nickel Mines Ltd. discovered chalcocite and malachite mineralization in surface outcrops of Sibley stromatolitic dolostone on the property and drilled 7 short Winkie holes that reportedly intersected 3.7-4.3 m of dolomitic rock in which 4 holes had copper mineralization visually estimated at 0.2 to 0.4% Cu in the upper half of the dolostone No assay results were reported (AFRI 20000005253). The best grab sample from the 2013 program returned an assay of 0.35% Cu. The best drill intersection from the 2013 program was DL13-4-1 which contained 26 cm of 1.04% Cu. Two other intersections of 94 and 99 cm contained 0.21% and 0.26% Cu respectively (AFRI 20000008063).
