PGM mineralization was discovered at Lac des Iles by prospectors in 1963. Gunnex Limited acquired the property in 1963 and subsequently optioned it to Anaconda American Brass. PGM's and base metals were discovered in eight (8) zones between 1963 and 1966. Boston Bay Mines acquired the property in 1974 and discovered the Roby Zone. Boston Bay optioned the property to Texasgulf Canada in 1975 who delineated the Roby Zone which is currently being mined. Madeleine Mines Ltd. acquired fifty per cent (50%) ownership of the leased claims from The Sheridan Platinum Group in 1986 and continued to delineate the Roby Zone. Construction of a concentrator was completed and production commenced in 1990. Production was halted by the Ministry of Environment because proper operating permits had not been obtained. In 1991, Kaiser-Francis Oil Company acquired the controlling share block of Madeleine Mines Ltd. and effectively took over the management of the Company. Lac des Iles Mines Ltd. was incorporated as a subsidiary of Madeleine Mines in 1991 and all assets, including the mining claims, were rolled over into LDI. LDI's management was successful in obtaining the necessary permits and commenced commercial production in December 1993. This brought the property to a 3,000 ton per day operation. In 1994, LDI gained one hundred percent (100%) ownership of the leased claims. Madeleine Mines Ltd. changed its name to North American Palladium Ltd. (NAP) in June 1993 by Amendment of Articles. 2001: new mill facility was commissioned with a nominal design capacity of 15,000 tonnes per day. The Offset zone was discovered in 2001. 2009: Cowboy and Outlaw Zones discovered during infill drilling on the Offset Zone. 2010: NAP - 25 trenches totaling a length of 2595 m, 242 DDH totaling 82131 m. 2011: NAP - 15 Trenches totaling a length of 1500 m, 234 DDH totaling 79991 m. New underground zone (Sheriff) was discovered in 2012. 2013: Construction of the new shaft into the Offset Zone was completed. NAP drilled 212 DDH totalling 54,532 m. 2014: NAP drilled 66 DDH totalling 36,309 m. 2019: NAP drilled 65 surface DDH totalling 36,300 m. Impala Platinum acquired the property in October. 2020: Impala Canada drilled 12 surface DDH totalling 7,791 m.

Dec 07, 2005 (B Schnieders) - The Lac des Iles complex is the largest and economically most important member of the Lac des Iles intrusive suite. The Lac des Iles complex comprises 2 intrusions including the Northern Ultramafic intrusion and the gabbroic Mine Block intrusion. The Lac des Iles complex has been intruded by biotite tonalite and tonalite gneiss and lies at the north end of the Shelby Lake fault (Stone et al., 2003). The gabbroic Mine Block intrusion is roughly elliptical in plan with a long axis extending northeasterly over a distance of 4 km. It occurs directly south of the Northern Ultramafic intrusion. At the Roby Zone, Lavigne and Michaud (2001) identified 3 types of ore including breccia, high grade and North Roby varieties of which the breccia ore is volumetrically dominant, The heterolithic gabbro breccia, which hosts the breccia ore contains fragments representative of most lithologies in the Mine Block intrusion. Platinum group elelent (PGE) mineralization is confined mainly to the the gabbro matrix (Hinchey, Hattori and Lavigne, 2003) and includes kotulskite, merenskyite, braggite, and vysotskite associated with fine-grained disseminated pyrrhotite, pyrite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite. The sulphide minerals comprise up to 5% of the breccia matrix. High-grade ore occurs in a strongly sheared and altered unit of pyroxenite and melanogabbro (up to 25 m wide) in the east central portion of the Roby Zone. Pyroxene grains within the host rock are altered to amphibole and chlorite. The altered unit contains up to 3% disseminated sulphide grains. Lavigne and Michaud (2001) noted a strong association of PGE mineralization with brecciated rock and varitextured gabbro within which magmatic minerals are variously altered to hydrous silicates. These authors concluded that the mineralization resulted from forcible introduction of a PGE-and sulphide-rich magma into the partially crystallized magma chamber of the Mine Block Intrusion (Stone et al, 2003).
Dec 07, 2005 (Q Unknown) - Platinum group element mineralization is associated with pyroxenite, gabbronorite, and gabbro in areas that have been brecciated and invaded by pegmatitic gabbro typically containing from 0 to 5 % pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and pentlandite. The Roby Zone contains two distinct zones of mineralization separated by a zone of sheared and mineralized pyroxenite that trends north-northwest. North of the shear zone the mineralization is contained within coarse grain gabbro and gabbronorite that strikes northeast and dips to the east-southeast variably at 60 to 75 degrees. This mineralization tends to be sulphide-poor. South of the shear zone the mineralization is contained within a heterolithic gabbro breccia with abundant pegmatitic gabbro. This zone is in sharp contact with the pyroxenite, and the ore grades diminish gradually to the west. The zone is shaped like a sideways funnel facing the pyroxenite to the east. This zone typically 2% sulphides. The pyroxenite is well mineralized and becomes higher grade ore in those areas of more intense shearing. The hanging wall to this zone dips steeply to the east and is well defined by the barren leucogabbro wallrock. The pyroxenite is well mineralized and becomes higher grade ore in those areas of more intense shearing. The hanging wall to this zone dips steeply to the east and is well defined by the barren leucogabbro wallrock.

Dec 07, 2005 (Q Unknown) - The ultramafic intrusion is composed of two coalescing centres, each of which consists of several intrusive phases. The centres are defined by the distribution of lithologies and attitudes of layering. The lithologic sequence of early peridotitc rocks, followed by clinopyroxene, and finally by late websterite and gabbronorite, suggests that the ultramafic rocks folow a crystallization sequence of olivine, oliving-clinopyroxene, clinopyroxene, clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene, and finally clinopyroxene-orthopyroxene-plagioclase.

Dec 07, 2005 (Q Unknown) - PGE occur in variable amounts in almost every rock type comprising the Roby Zone, including the northern layered sequence, heterolithic gabbro, pegmatitic gabbro dikes and the shear zone. Previous studies have identified the habit and composition of individual PGM. 12 PGM have been identified in the Roby Zone, including bragite, kotulskte, isometrieite, merenskyite, moncheite, palladoarsenide, sperrylite, stibiopalladinite, stillwaterite, vysotskite, unnamed AG4Pd3Te4 and unnamed Pd5As2. The reletive order of abundance of the PGM varies considerably across the deposit. Braggite and vysotskite predominate in many areas within the southern portion of the Roby Zone, specifically in the shear zone and heterolithic gabbro. The majority of PGM occur wholly within sulphides or associated wih sulphides at sulphide-sillicate boundries. PGM also occur as discrete minerals within secondary sillicates of altered rocks, such as the shear zone and heterolithic gabbro, In addition to forming discrete PGM, palladium also occurs in solid solution in melonite, gold, and pentlandite.
Dec 07, 2005 (Q Unknown) - Alteration has occured to varying degrees throughout the Roby Zone and is most prominent in the shear zone and the heterolithic gabbro. Alteration varies with the host lithology and ranges in intensity from weak-to-srong, local-to-pervasive and is commonly intensified along narrow fractures. The orthopyroxenes have been altered to talc, anthophyllite and serpentine; clinopyroxene have been altered to actinolite, chlorite, tremolite and hornblende; and plagioclase has been altered to ziosite, epidote and sericite. Pervasive alteration results in the complete metamorphism of the primary silicates to amphibole pseudomorphs. The psydomorhic amphiboles are of use in identifying the primary cumulate mineralogy and for classification of the igneous layers. Narrow zones of mylonitization occur locally, resulting in significant decrease in grain size of the cumulus and intercumulus minerals.
