Exploration History

1940s: Discovered by J.N Bovin and A. Gilbert. 1949: Conwest Exploration Company Limited and Central Patricia Gold Mines Limited put in 6 diamond drill holes for 357 m. 1957: Kennco Explorations (Canada) Limited examined the area. 1959: The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada limited (later Cominco Limited) performed ground EM and geological surveys over the ironstone. 1961-1963: The property was optioned by Centurion Mines Limited who performed magnetic, EM and geological surveys followed by a 5-hole diamond drill program for 199 m carried out in 1962 and 1963.

Mineralization Comments

Apr 10, 2019 (Therese Pettigrew) - When the occurrence was examined in 1949 by Conwest Exploration Company Ltd. and Central Patricia Gold Mines Ltd, they reported the results of two analyses: 6.19% Pb over a width of 5.7 m in a shear zone and 0.25 oz/t Au (8.57 g/t Au) over a width of 25.4 cm. Kennco Explorations interests were focussed on a 61 m wide zone of magnetite-pyrite-pyrrhotite that parallels the contact between felsic and mafic volcanic rocks striking roughly NE and, toward one extremity, cuts into the mafic volcanic rocks. This zone was traced for 2195 m and dips vertically. Massive mineralization at some locations in the zone consists of 80% pyrrhotite, 20% pyrite, and less than 1% chalcopyrite. Disseminated mineralization consists of a maximum of 20% pyrrhotite and less than 1% chalcopyrite. In 1961, exploration by Centurion Mines Ltd. focussed on disseminated and massive, argentiferous galena, which is confined to the upper portion of a 91 m thickness of iron formation striking north to NE and dipping at about 60SE. The formation is locally folded in a complex manner. The mineralization occurs as disseminated grains constituting no more than 1-2% of the rock, vein fillings up to 35.6 cm thick associated with quartz, and lenses 20 cm by 25 cm thick in fractured lean iron formation. Grab samples taken by OGS staff returned the following results: Sample EF 2-5, 20 cm wide quartz-galena vein 0.06% Cu, 47.3% Pb, 98.44 oz/ton Ag; Sample EF 2-7, 46 cm wide blue quartz vein 0.66 oz/ton Ag (Thurston and Carter, 1970).
