Exploration History

1911: Moore (1911) showed a pit or shaft on the property mentioned by Graham (1931) in his later report on the Davidson-Carr. 1928-1929: Golden Centre Mining Co. or Mineral Research Corp. did considerable exploration on this property which was under option. A shaft inclined at -60 was sunk to 160 feet and 150 feet of underground lateral work was completed. In 1930, all work had ceased and the shaft was flooding (Graham 1931). A separate report reported the construction in 1928-29 of a 18 ft high headframe, a combined hoist house and blacksmith shop with bunk house and ice house. In addition 230 feet of drifting had been done on the 160 level and 30 feet at the 130 foot level (Annual Report of Ontario Department of Mines, v39,pt 1,p119) 1970: McRae Mining Corporation Ltd. held a group of 35 unpatented claims at the north end of the Northeast Arm of Sturgeon Lake. In 1970, they conducted airborne magnetic and electro-magnetic surveys over the claim group. The claims were subsequently dropped (Trowell 1983). The claim group is underlain to the west by an intercalated assemblage of felsic to intermediate pyroclastics, mafic to intermediate flows, and diorite, gabbro and feldspar porphyritic gabbro intrusions. To the east the claim group is underlain by mafic to intermediate amygdaloidal and pillowed flows and thin interflow units of felsic to intermediate pyroclastics. This claim group includes within its boundaries the old Davidson-Carr occurrence (see S. Johnson) 1974: S. Johnson held two claims which covered the Davidson-Carr occurrence.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Tuomi) - The property is underlain by northeast trending bands of mafic intrusive alternating with bands of felsic metavolcanic and volcaniclastic rocks. Outcrop patterns in the mafic rocks suggest that tight folding is present. The gold-bearing quartz vein at the Davidson-Carr showing is 0.7 to 1 m wide and strikes 040 degrees. The vein is exposed at the mouth of the adit on the shoreline. A northeast trending fault is believed to cut the quartz vein at the lake shore. On the north point of an island to the south of the Davidson-Carr showing, a series of narrow veins strike 020 degrees and dip southwest. A trenched area exposes a group of nearly parallel quartz veins which range from 5 to 10 cm in width, in a wider zone of wallrock (Sioux Lookout Assessment File 52J/02NE-0036-B1). Sampling and analysis for gold on the showings has given assays of grab samples which varied from 0.01 to 2 ounces gold per ton. The majority of the samples contained less than 0.1 ounce gold per ton. No analyses of bulk or chip samples have been reported.
