Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Tuomi) - Several trenches were excavated in shallow pits at the contact between intermediate tuffs and flows with younger, intrusive gabbro. Most outcrops are sheared with northwest to north foliation with dips to the east. The veins contain quartz and pyrite with minor carbonate.

Lithology Comments

Aug 04, 2022 (Q Unknown) - Little exploration was done around Thomas Lake between 1912 and 1930. Most exploration was done was centred on the St. Anthony Mine and surrounding area. In 1932 exploration increased to include Ouillette and Couture Lakes. The Mine Lake and Thomas Lake areas were prospected and 2 shafts were sunk on Mine Lake. During the period several companies with overlapping management carried out development and promotional programs north of Ouillette Lake. Many of the quartz veins from North Bay of Sturgeon Lake to the east side of Mine Lake were examined by trenching and assay of the sulphide bearing veins.1) The North Bay suite, a 2 km to 3 km wide band of mafic volcanics which follow the eastern contact of the granite batholith northeast from East Bay to Chivelston Lake. A number of quartz veins in minor showings near the St. Anthony Mine may belong to this group. The North Bay occurrence is considered to belong to this type. 2) A heart-shaped, north-trending gabbro intrusive is bordered east and west by intermediate to felsic metavolcanics. This group of veins include the Contact and Stewart Veins but not the Thomas Lake veins to the east of Thomas Lake. 3) The Thomas Lake area, which is similar in siting to No. 2 group but is located on the east side of the gabbro intrusive. Further work is required to determine if the showings are similar to No. 2 group. 4) The Mine Lake area, which is hosted in gabbro and has been explored by 2 shafts with limited underground development. Another vein to the northeast of Mine Lake is located at the contact with a felsic band and may be related to the Thomas Lake veins.
