Lithology Comments

02/24/2020 (T Pettigrew) - The total area of this peatland is 159 ha. The average depth of the 33 points investigated on this deposit was 2.3 m. The maximum depth encounter ed was 5.7 m. The total volume of this deposit was 2.4 million cubic metres. The volume where peat depth exceeded l m and 2 m was 2.0 and 1.7 million cubic metres respectively. Over 85% of the total volume is classed as humified peat. The surficial layer had a consistent distribution across the deposit with thickness usually 20 to 30 cm. The humified layer varied in thickness in relation to total depth with thicknesses greatest in the centre of the deposit. Average peat depth under bog formations was 2.4 m with low shrub area having thinner peat layers than graminoid areas. Peat depths under fen formations averaged 2.8 m. Moss peats form the bulk of the deposit (98%). Composition typically was 80 to 901 Sphagnum with 10% shrubs and/or 10 to 20% sedge, principally Carex but with some Eriophorum and Scheuchzeria. Basal moss peat layers often had a brown moss component and thin basal sedge peat layers also occurred. Up to l m of ooze was common in substrate depressions.
