Lithology Comments

Aug 24, 2018 (Therese Pettigrew) - The trenches are characterized by intercalated felsic volcaniclastics and clastic sediments intruded by late mafic, intermediate and felsic dikes. The clastic sediments consist of repeating beds of thin to thickly bedded siltstone and sandstone that display graded bedding, cross bedding, and flame features. The clastic sediment layers display strong pervasive carbonate alteration that is developed along specific horizons. Bedding is oriented between 285 0 and 246 0 dipping 87 0N. Tops directions based on the flame structures and crossbedding indicate a facing direction towards the north. The felsic volcaniclastics can be subdivided into fine and coarse grained phases. The coarse felsic volcaniclastics are very similar to those observed at the Black #4 and the Holbrook Trench (Chubb et al., 1997). The coarse felsic volcaniclastics contain the bulk of the quartz-carbonate vein stockwork. The quartz-carbonate vein stockwork consists of thin orthogonal quartz veins (flat lying and vertical) that are continuous along strike but are restricted to specific volcaniclastic beds. The quartz veins are massive and white with trace pyrite and are relatively undeformed. The coarse volcaniclastics contain trace disseminated and fracture related pyrite mineralization. The finer felsic volcaniclastics (reworked lapilli tuff) consist of more tuffaceous looking material and display bedding and coarse graded bedding. The felsic volcaniclastics display strong selective sericite, weak selective carbonate and weak selective chlorite alteration (AFRI 52J04NE2002).
