Exploration History

Noranda Exploration Company Ltd. conducted geophysical (magnetic and electromagnetic) and geological surveys over their Island 17 Property consisting of 7 claims (Pa 376756 to 62 inclusive) in 1978. Their assessment file (52J14NE0015-B1) map indicates anomalous gold (.32 opt) and silver (.28 opt) to the west of a 'Noranda trench' on the northwest shore of Island 17. Noranda was exploring for base metal mineralization presumably as a follow-up to their regional airborne survey completed by Questor. Roy Rupert of Sault Ste. Marie completed a sampling program over three island claims (Pa 816588,816601, 816591) that comprised his Lake St. Joseph Property in 1984. Samples LSJ-8 and LSJ-9 returned .076 and .042 oz/ton respectively. These samples were taken from the same area that Noranda had indicated on their 1978 geological map.

Geology Comments

Aug 23, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - This occurrence is based on the reported presence of anomalous gold and silver mineralization within suphide facies iron formation at the northwestern end of Lake St. Joseph Island 17 (Berger 1977). Berger (1977) indicates that the Island 17 area is underlain by a complex assemblage of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The northwestern portion of the island was mapped by Berger (1977) as consisting of a mixture of sulphide and oxide facies iron formation. The iron formation sequence is described as consisting largely of graphitic argillite, chert and intra-formational chert breccia with 5 to 20% pyrite in stringers and pods that are randomly distributed parallel to foliation. The central portion of the island was mapped as felsic metavolcanics, while the southeastern portion is indicated to be underlain by intermediate volcanics. The interpreted stratigraphic contacts strike approximately northeast. A significant north-south striking shear zone is also indicated to be located immediately to the west of Island 17. An assay of 0.32 oz/ton Au and 0.28 oz/ton Ag was reported from a grab sample of sulphide facies iron formation mineralized with minor pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and ankerite (Berger 1977). Two grab samples (LSJ 008 and LSJ 009) collected in the same area by R.J. Rupert in 1984 (AFRI# 52J14NE9437) were reported to have assayed 0.076 and 0.042 oz/ton. A third sample (LSJ 011) collected by Rupert but not assayed, was indicated to possibly contain visible gold.
