Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (K R Kettles) - The rocks in the area of Madsen Mines can be grouped into two sequences: a lower tholeiitic to komatiitic sequence and an upper calc-alkalic sequence. The tholeiitic-komatiitic sequence contains two parts as well: a lower part composed of tholeiitic pillowed basalt, which contains the Austin Shear Zone, the host for the gold deposits; and an upper part of tholeiitic-komatiitic felsic to intermediate volcanics with minor interspersed mafic volcanics. Gabbro sills and dikes are present throughout the tholeiitic-komatiitic sequence. The calc-alkalic sequence is composed of rhyolitic flows, tuffs, and breccias. The rocks vary in strike across the area. Near the Madsen Mine the strike of the rocks is 030 deg and the dip is 65 deg to the southeast. One kilometre NE of Madsen the strike is 45 deg dipping 70 deg southeast. Foliation generally strikes 45 to 60 deg and dips 70 deg southeast. The rocks are metamorphosed to amphibolite facies. The occurrence is situated in the upper part of the lower tholeiitic-komatiitic sequence near the contact with the calc-alkalic sequence. It is comprised of a quartz vein in sheared gabbro.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (K R Kettles) - The host rocks for the Madsen gold deposits are altered and sheared tholeiitic to komatiitic pillowed basalt. These rocks contain the Austin Shear zone which hosts the gold deposits in the area. They are overlain by tholeiiticfelsic to intermediate volcanic rocks previously thought to be part of the upper calc-alkalic sequence. The tholeiitic -komatiitic mafic volcanics are cut by gabbro sills and dikes. The Madsen No. 7 vein is situated in the upper part of the lower tholeiitic-komatiitic sequence near the contact with the calc-alkalic sequence. The occurrence is a quartz vein in sheared gabbro.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (K R Kettles) - The occurrence is situated in the upper part of the lower tholeiitic-komatiitic sequence near the contact with the calc-alkalic sequence. It is comprised of a quartz vein in sheared gabbro. The vein strikes 25 degs. It varies from 5 to 30 cm wide, and strikes for over 150 m. In places the wall rocks are also well mineralized. Total widths of vein and mineralized wall rocks range from 30 to 60 cm. Mineralization consists of Au, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and arsenopyrite. At the eastern end of the vein, an average of 8 channel samples yielded 0.44 oz/ton Au over 0.36 m for a length of 22.6 m. Approximately 37 m to the west 3 channel samples averaged 0.61 oz/ton Au over 0.15 m for a length of 9.1 m.
