Exploration History

1984: Dunlop Explorations working for the Ontario Gold Joint Venture (Northern Dynasty Explorations Ltd. and Newfield Minerals Inc.) conducted a prospecting and sampling program in the Dempster Lake area. 1985-1988: The Ontario Gold Joint Venture (Northern Dynasty Explorations Ltd. and Newfield Minerals Inc.) conducted an exploration program on a large block of claims in the Dempster Lake area. The multi-phased program included geological mapping, stripping and trenching, rock and soil geochemistry and airborne mag and EM surveys, ground mag and EM surveys and diamond-drilling.

Mineralization Comments

Jun 21, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - This gold occurrence is described by Youngman (1985) as an outcrop of feldspar porphyry containing quartz-tourmaline stringer veins. The geological compilation map included in Youngman (1985) also indicates the presence of chalcopyrite mineralization in the veins. This occurrence is interpreted by Youngman (1985) to be one of a number of gold occurrences that are found within a well-foliated to sheared metadacite unit along a total strike length of 8.2 km. Other occurrences associated with this horizon include the North Dempster Lake gold occurrence to the northeast (MDI52O07SW00006), and the South Dunlop Lake occurrence (MDI52O03NE00005) to the southwest. The foliation orientation in the sheared metadacite unit varies from northeast-striking in the vicinity of Dempster Lake, to southeast-striking in the Dunlop Lake area as it wraps around the southern margins of the Graniteboss Stock. Foliation in the vicinity of the Duffel Lake #6 occurrence is indicated by Youngman to be oriented approximately 060/90. The variability in the foliation orientation is likely to be related to emplacement of the Graniteboss Stock, which is a 2700 Ma late- to post-tectonic intrusion (Stott 1996). Mineralization in the area of this occurrence is likely to be related to a nearby major southeast-striking deformation zone that was identified by Stott and Wallace (1984) in the area between Billett and Teevin Lakes. The most notable assay value reported by Youngman (1985) from this occurrence was a grab sample result of 1680 ppb Au.
