Geology Comments

Jun 22, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - Sage and Breaks (1982) indicate that the Zionz Lake area is underlain by a metavolcanic-metasedimentary rock sequence that is considered to be an extension of the Birch-Uchi greenstone belt which is located to the west. These rocks have been classified as part of the Confederation Assemblage by Stott and Corfu (1991). The dominant lithology in the Zionz Lake area is reported to be mafic to intermediate metavolcanics that have been metamorphosed to upper greenschist to middle amphibolite grade. Minor amounts of felsic to intermediate metavolcanics are reported to occur near the southern margin of the belt. A significant clastic metasedimentary rock sequence (largely greywacke) has been mapped in the northern portion of the belt. Two thin iron formation sequences have also been reported to occur in this belt (Sage and Breaks 1982). The supracrustal rocks are bounded to the north, south and east by felsic intrusive rocks. Sage and Breaks (1982) describe the intrusion to the north of the belt as a metamorphosed granodiorite. A later granitic unit centred on Zionz Lake (Zionz Lake Stock) cross-cuts the older granodiorite. Hudec (1969) indicates that the general structural trend (i.e., foliation and stratigraphic layering) in the Zionz Lake area is northeast-southwest, with these structures generally dipping steeply to moderately toward the northwest (80 to 45 degrees). Sage and Breaks (1982) have interpreted that the supracrustal rocks of this belt have been folded into a synclinal structure. Hudec (1969) also suggests the presence of two significant fault structures in the area, and notes significant shearing of mafic metavolcanics on the southeast shore of Zionz Lake, where disseminated sulphide mineralization has been documented.

Mineralization Comments

Jun 22, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - This discretionary occurrence is based on a reported copper assay of 0.04% obtained from a sample of sheared, amphibolitized mafic metavolcanic rock that occurs on a shoal in Zionz Lake (Hudec 1969). Mineralization at this location is reported to consist of disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite.

Nov 08, 2022 (Therese Pettigrew) - Sulphide mineralization occurs in Early Precambrian sheared mafic volcanics. Pyrite, pyrrhotite, and flecks of chalcopyrite were found (SMDR 00498).
