Feb 07, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - The supracrustal rocks of the southeastern portion of the Pickle Lake Greenstone Belt have been classified by Young (2003) as being part of the approximately 2744 Ma Confederation Assemblage (Young 2003). The rocks at the base of this east-facing assemblage are dominated by pillowed mafic volcanic flows that are geochemically distinct from those found further to the west in the Pickle Crow Assemblage (Young 2003). The Confederation Assemblage also contains significant units of intermediate to felsic metavolcanic rocks that include tuff, lapilli tuff and agglomerate. The Eye Lake gold occurrences are located within an approximately north-south to north-northeast striking metavolcanic rock sequence that is dominated by mafic metavolcanic flows to the west and by intermediate to felsic metavolcanics (dacitic to andesitic pyroclastics and flows) to the east (Fogal and Higginson 1988). Foliation is approximately parallel to stratigraphy and generally has been mapped by Fogal and Higginson (1988) as having near-vertical dip. A thick unit of banded biotite-quartz to hornblende-quartz gneiss has also been identified in the area east of these occurrences. The contact between the gneiss and metavolcanics is interpreted by Fogal and Higginson (1988) as an approximately north-northeast striking fault. This fault also has a close spatial association with the Eye Lake gold occurrences.

Feb 07, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - The Eye Lake Prospect was initially described by North (1984) as an approximately 60 cm wide sulphide zone that occurs in sheared intermediate metavolcanics. Grab samples from this zone returned gold assays of 0.206 oz/ton and 0.093 oz/ton. A nearby shear zone containing quartz-tourmaline veining was also reported by North (1984) to contain anomalous gold values. Follow-up sampling in an area immediately north of the original occurrence by Fogal and Higginson (1988) identified additional mineralization (assays up to 630 ppb Au) at locations with quartz-carbonate veining and limonitic staining. Diamond drilling of this zone by Power Explorations is reported by Fogal and Higginson (1988) to have encountered anomalous gold mineralization (i.e., >0.02 oz/t) in three diamond drill holes (EL-87-2, 3 and 4). Gold mineralization in EL-87-2 was reported to occur in intermediate flows containing quartz-carbonate stringers, while gold mineralization in the other two holes was reported to be associated with pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite mineralization in intermediate to felsic tuff. The most notable reported assays included 0.02 ox/ton Au over 1.5 m in EL-87-2, 0.024 oz/ton Au over 1.5 m in EL-87-4, and 0.026 oz/ton Au over 1 m in EL-87-3.
