Mineralization Comments

Feb 06, 2007 (Mark Puumala) - Sage and Breaks (1982) report that copper-nickel mineralization at this location occurs in an ultramafic raft (dimensions 580 by 60 m) enclosed by a small granitic stock. Patterson (1980) indicates that this intrusion consists of altered gabbro (80%), altered peridotite (10%), minor altered dunite and an oxide-rich layer (10%). Mineralization within this intrusion is reported by Patterson (1980) to consist of primary disseminated sulphide, metamorphosed disseminated sulphide and oxide-layer sulphides. The sulphide content of the intrusion locally exceeds 5 %, with the primary and metamorphosed disseminated sulphides consisting primarily of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite with exsolved pentlandite. The sulphides are also indicated to be intergrown with magnetite and ilmentie (Patterson 1980). Oxide layer (ilmenomagnetite, ilmenite and gahnite) sulphides include chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrite and cobalt-rich pentlandite. The most favourable assay from this deposit obtained during diamond drilling by Kapkichi Nickel Mines in 1956 is reported to have averaged 1.31% Cu and 0.14% Ni over 6.1 m (Sage and Breaks 1982). Mason et al. (2001) indicate that this deposit contains reserves totaling 7.5 million tons grading 0.41% Cu and 0.10% Ni.
